The transition to Rico

I don't think they need to got to Rico unless they change the offensive approach. Cowboys are a passing team, so they may prefer TP out there the majority of the time, however, if they ever decide to go run heavy I'd like to see a 3 RB committee (TP, Rico n Hunter).

Over the next three games, the Cowboys have an opportunity to transition from a finesse running game to a bruising back and giving the ball to Rico Dowdle 15 times minimum versus the Giants the Panthers and Washington .

If this doesn’t happen, then you know, Mike McCarthy has very little intuition and is a complete and total ignoramus if you don’t know that already.

Turn Rico loose - which intern may actually turn Pollard loose.
its not just switching the RB. the OL play has to change. right now it feel the OL plays finesse game, both in run and pass. in Passing situations, they are on their heels, waiting for defender to get to them and they react. with this OL, we need to attack and control the defenders. same with running game. just take the man in front of you and let the RB find his hole. this finesse, zonish blocking scheme is taking away the OL's strength.

Rico and Tolbert definitely need more opportunities moving forward.

Damn Plasticman, I normally am with you, but I think he is a bruising back kind of like Marion.
*Had that one run not been stopped by the hold call I think it breaks his long. He was still going forward when they were blowing.
I wish he were Marion Barber.

The first time that Dowdle ever carried the ball on a 3rd down play was last month. He did it three times All three times was when the Cowboys were winning or losing by two TD's or more. He got a 1st down once. He has carreid the ball in the 4th quarter of games 15 times in his career and only three times the Cowboys weren't ahead by double digits. He wasn't there becasue they needed his power to run out the clock in a close game. He was there because they didn't want to risk Pollard.

If they considered Dowdle to be a bruising back then he would be in the red zone far more often. Rico is filler. He takes the excess carries at a point when his productivity doesn't effect the game. He doesn't really have any special role on the offense, They don't bring him in for short yardage situations. He's not their 3rd down receiving back. He's pretty much a "warm body", "trash time" replacement for Pollard.

He does have one thing in common with Barber. He has been misevaluated and an example of the disrespect that Jerry Jones has for the importance of a solid running game. Jerry has always been about the flashy spectacle, the exciting big play, the acrobatic display of the passing game. If you could fit Jerry's personality to a specific position in football it would be at WR and that is where he puts his money most of the time.

Remember, we are talking about the GM that once said Emmitt was a luxury, not a necessity.

Right now the Cowboys RB squad features a career 2nd back, a 6th round pick that is considered tiny by NFL standards and three undrafted free agents with less than a100 combined NFL carries between them. This is not a situation that is going to get better as the season progresses. This is especially true when you consider the state of the offensive line.

The Cowboys had the ability and resources to turn the RB squad into an advantage and they let it run right past them. As a result, they are a one dimensional, limited offense with a QB running for his life 75% of the time.

You really think the Cowboys will take these games lightly? It’s the NFL anything can happen. Dak could step the wrong way and he is done. The Cowboys will be focused they have to get better. It’s one game at a time.
I would hope not, but playing down to the opponent, or deciding max effort isn’t necessary, has been a problem….and it’s not a shot at Dallas. Many teams have that problem.

It's not going to matter until the OL gets their act together. No one is getting yards until the OL can consistently run block.

The Giants are going to come into Dallas being embarrassed. Teams rarely play 3 bad games in a row. Carolina gets a few days off and have a good defense. Both games we should win but they won’t be easy.

I'd like to see rico get a series early in the game especially when they tend to run off center more. Then get pollard in there when the defense gets tired, a little beaten up and see if he can't break some off tackle runs like he has in the past.

Its just funny to me last year we were calling for Tony to carry the load and bench Zeke. This year its Pollard's turn and we want the guy behind him.

Dowdle- 3.8 per carry
Pollard- 4.0 per carry

I wouldnt say Rico has exactly lit it up to the point where you have to see more, but would start with giving him 8 carries a game. See what he does with it, then work Pollard into the rest. If Rico performs well maybe you get to a 50/50 split.

One thing is sure though, unless Pollard's value has dropped significantly I don't know that he's getting another contract here.

Rico has look better than Tony for the entire season. He needs more carries.

They also miss Zeke. Especially on plays needing less than 3 yards for a 1st down.
And especially in the red zone, and within the 10 yard line.

I realize it was more money than his play. Though many on here will not admit that. So another bone head decision by the FO not to negotiate a reduction in pay.
Actually they should have let Pollard go, kept Zeke, drafted a RB.
I agree. Pollard was not and is not best suited as the featured back, especially after the injury. Would’ve made way more sense to draft a future featured back and ease the transition from Elliott to him. The problems were that I don’t think Elliot was ready to accept a contract on the order of what he got from NE & the Cowboys would struggle to actually decrease his role in favor of a drafted back. This FO loves familiarity. It’s why Moore was retained when McCarthy was brought in.

And here I thought this was a thread about Rico Gathers.

Heck, I forgot all about that guy. I wonder how he's doing? Heard he's a rapper now.

Rico scares no one. He only has 133 yards rushing and is averaging under 4.0 a carry. He doesn’t even have a run of more than 10 yards.
