OK, I'm gonna go the other way and say that lazy writers will continue to be lazy and just expect everyone to accept that it happened without question. They've been insulting the viewers intelligence more and more as they go along. And I think it starts with Scott Gimple, who thinks he's the smartest guy in the room, despite the fact that ratings continue to plummet as he drives this thing into a ditch.

It will be interesting to see who's right next season. One of the few interesting things I'm expecting

Same here. My wife is keeping me interested more than anything this sorry show is doing. It's noticeable that it's stars are looking to leave left and right at this point. They see this thing tanking and want to get out.

It says a lot to me that the fact that this show won't have another new episode until what? October? doesn't affect me at all. There is literally nothing compelling happening right now to make me have to tune in next season. Nothing. And that's pretty sad from where this show used to sit.

My dream scenario would be Negan asking Michonne, "Michonne, how do you think the Whisperers were able to trap so many people–right under everyone's nose?"

I'd scream in glee like a girl.

Oh I think they gave their answer" and the only one we're going to get, when Michonne said to the King: "that woman (Alpha) was able to walk amongst us because we didn't know each other". That is all the explanation I expect from these lazy writers.

A couple thoughts...

Robert Kirkman, who created the graphic novel said recently that at some point the undead would just cease to be reanimated. And we've seen some of those on the cusp of permanently dying.

As far as the villains go, without them– and varying the way they go about doing things the show would probably have ended due to boredom a several seasons ago. To me the two most realistic villains were the "sons of anarchy" group that jumped Rick, Michonne & Carl, and Rick tore out the throat of the leader with his teeth. The other realistic group we Negan and his Saviors. I could easily see a group like that bullying other groups into giving them sustenance.

And a Walking Dead without villains?

It would be one episode after another of Daryl going out day after day, collecting goods and killing a few zombies.

Tough to fill a 16 episode season with that.

Not every episode has to be on this story arc, sometimes it's good to have a a few stand alone episodes thrown in. As an example I would use The X-Files, they had their main story arc, but they also would throw in the odd episode every now and then, that was a simple stand alone episode that didn't further or have any connection to the main story arc. It would be nice every once in a while they would throw in just a good ol' fashioned zombie smashing episode with some thrilling heroics or funny or weird happening. I think it would be fun to have an episode where several characters, tell a story about the strangest/weirdest walker they came across. A simple stand alone episode on something going wrong during what should have been a routine collection run. An episode recounting what happened to a character(s) when the apocalypse first started or how some of the newer characters first met. Those type of stand alone episodes can be good to reconnect the viewers with what the liked about The Walking Dead in the first place.

I'd like to see one where each recall the weirdest, funniest, strangest zombies, a bit of comic relief. Maybe someone ran across one in a chicken costume, then cut to them wrestling around "Family Guy" style. Or they came across someone that was famous/celebrity that had become a zombie, a la "Zombieland" I could see them run across someone like Sean Patrick Flannery that has become a zombie and someone recognizes him and tells Daryl that he kinda looks like his brother from Boondock Saints and of course, Daryl says he never saw the movie. Then that sparks a conversation/flashback about famous people that a couple others may have come across. Maybe it was a local weather girl, a famous athlete still wearing his uniform , some politician, actor/musician, whatever. Nothing slapstick, just something off beat and unexpected.

I still enjoy the show. Is it as good as it once was? Probably not but it's still better than most shows that get aired in my opinion.

I think the voice heard on the radio at the end was definitely female and I believe it was Maggie. My next best guess is it was Jadis.
