Based on his current role with the team, I'm not confident that Micah Parsons could remain effective through the length of a 2nd contract. I'm not saying this conclusively, I'm just troubled by a few things.
First, the average career of a DE or EDGE that was drafted in the 1st round after the year 2000 is 6.86 years. Less than a third of the 103 DE's played longer than 8 seasons.
Keep in mind that the majority of these guys were 15 to 35 pounds heavier than Parsons, they were better able to absorb the constant pounding.
Again, these were all 1st round draft picks. I wanted an apples to apples comparison so these guys, as a group, is were you would place Parsons. I used only inactive drafted after 2000, so they were all complete careers.
Second, Micah already has a pattern of reduced productivity towards the end of each season. His pressure numbers slide around the beginning of December and he practically disappears in the playoffs, where his dynamic play is needed the most.
I don't blame Parsons. I suspect that the fatigue builds through the season as he is constantly subjected to double teams by a pair of O-linemen. He's just not built like that and even if he tried to be, he would probably have to sacrifice speed.
Considering that he is already struggling to end each season, I don't see another 4 years of similar productivity. The only thing I see to stop this trajectory is a different role, the one I think he should have had in the first place. Make him an outside linebacker with the space to roam and opportunities to make more diverse big plays.
Besides, he can still blitz on occasion to the point that it would be more effective because the opponent wouldn't know if, when, and in what direction Micah was coming. That's the way it should have been from the beginning.
However, under the current circumstances, he would be the odd man out, as they used to say.
