They were close to a nice offseason

They mostly did what they always do. Fill holes with Jags, then conduct the draft. obviously they are not trying to compete for anything this year as the draft picks will take time to hit their peak. This is what they do but the abnormal part is they aggressively went after guys that went high in the draft that didn't work out. Like trading picks for mazi or taco thinking they just needed a change to break out. They love hitting dry wells and seeing if they can't strike a little oil from it.

When you look at the draft in a vacuum, I have no real issues. I am a Brugler guy and I think we ended up with three of his Top 50 after three rounds. After that, it's always a crap shoot in the later rounds so maybe we hit on a few, maybe we bombed out. The draft will be largely decided by what the first three picks do and I think they are nice selections.

But when you zoom out and put the draft in the context of the entire offseason, it's hard to get excited. Putting aside the fact that we hired a guy that no one ever deemed worthy of a HC gig despite the family name and being in coaching for years, the draft highlights the shortcomings of our FA plan.

We still have needs at WR (sorry, I am not buying Mingo as a viable #2 at this point). We have a need at DT (it's a wasteland again outside of Odi). We could have used a talented back. And all of those could have been addressed in the draft but if they had been, then we would have holes at the interior OL, DL, CB, etc.

When you refuse to fill legitimate holes with players that can actually fill those holes with quality play, you get what we've gotten the last who knows how many years.

We sign reclamation projects and washed up players because they are cheap. Williams at TB? Great, he was once a high pick but has done nothing in the league. I'd rather spent the money on JK Dobbins, who yes, has an injury history but has also been far more productive than Williams. Thomas at DT? Oh, he played for Eberflus? Great. He's been mediocre and can't stop the run. Poona Ford was out there and signed a pretty reasonable deal with a small signing bonus and only $15MM guaranteed over 3 years.

Imagine pairing this draft class with a FA class that was highlighted by Ford, Dobbins and maybe even Keenan Allen to be a #2. And they absolutely could have afforded all three if they wanted.
Can't they still get Dobbins and Allen? No one wants them since they are walking injuries but hey sign them for the training room. Ford is meh at best.....

What do you have an issue with?

You admit Blue isn't an every down back. You tried to say our rookie tandem is in the mold of Newhouse, Dorsett, which is kind of laughable at this point. And the one back Mafah, likely is on the outside looking in at a 53 man roster spot anyway. Unless you think Jerry and Stephen are going to toss both Williams and Sanders aside after selling them as important offseason acquisitions.

All would have been better if they had signed Dobbins

Then you have Dobbins, Blue and then you can find another cheap vet back with Mafah as a practice squad guy.
Those are your opinions, and you're usually wrong.

Hence...

Ford is a pretty good run stuffer and significantly better than any option we have at the 1T. He rated out as a good run stuffing DT last year.

Huge holes at LBer and #2 WR...........plug these two with QUALITY/high-end players
There are option to get a WR. They might be costly but there are options. Pickens, Sutton are just a couple. I hate trading picks in top 4 rounds, especially for a guy you then have to sign. So it comes down to cost vs benefit. Mingo doesn’t impress me so I’d be looking but to get a nice WR2 I expect it to be a bit costly in terms of picks. But I’d rather go with Mingo than give a high pick for any guy out there and then a big contract

Nice offseason?........when this FO starts utilizing free agency like most of the other 31 teams i can see a "nice offseason" possibility.

They're roster building with one hand tied behind their back and there's no sane reason for it .

Hire a real GM with the autonomy to hire and fire
I agree with you on our team building philosophy, but hiring a GM comes with a downside too. If the Giants GM wasn't clawing for his life, does he bring in Wilson and Winston? Does he trade back into the first for Jaxson Dart? He's doing anything to win more games to save his job. All this will do is hurt the team by putting themselves in a worse draft position next season. But it might save his job. I don't want a GM doing that either. I just wish Jerry and son would not entirely ignore the really good players in FA. Or maybe trade for a player like Breece Hall. Something like that. He doesn't have to go nuts.

Hire a real GM with the autonomy to hire and fire.......why would u even say this ?? the owner does the hiring, and he is the GM!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be stupid to trade for sutton or picken or any of the available guys.
They just need to use the guys they have and get rid of them if they cant play good enough.
Then next draft get someone in 2nd round. Or if a real good one there, in the 1st round.

The goal this season is just to try and make playoffs, not go on a SB run.

We go into every offseason with one hand tied behind our backs because our front office is too timid to make any quality signings in free agency.
It gives the other teams an advantage over us.
This is yet one more reason on the list of why we have not been to a NFCCG in 29 years.
Until we get a quality front office , we are never going to make any serious post season noise.

So if Booker helps the OL open up holes for Blue to use his blazing speed. Does the not make him a play maker?
Just because he was not sexy shiny new toy pick?
ok, do we grab a DT with the 12th pick and then OG in the 3rd....which one would have made the team better? this defense sucked. I mean pure suckiness. a RG, the absolute least important position on the OL (less than LG), is not going to lead to additional 10+ points we need to offset the crappy defense.

and you think all the runs are going to come behind Booker? if not, then the other 4 were here last year and they couldn't get it done. and you can't tell me running game failed because of one RG. its not the main key to offensive success.

show me one superbowl team in the past 15 years with 3 1st rund OL men on the team. I am not talking about Free agency or resigning players. I am not saying don't spend on OL. I am saying we don't need to have 3 first round OL men as we have done in the past 4 years.

you win with defense. we can't continuously think we can outscore everyone and think we are going to rush 200 yards a game and control the clock for 40 minutes....this Blue running this and running that is just non-sensical fantasy people have

Agree that he doesn't have to go nuts in FA but God Almighty can he at least be in the middle of the pack??

He's chosen the extreme disinterested option unless it's over the hill players or busts from other teams

Old man Kendricks was his prize FA last year.....really?

Yeah, just when you see a good fit. But he chooses to shop at the dollar store. Sometimes he gets lucky with a gem. Like trading for Robert Quinn for a 6th. I think Jayron Kearse was a FA. Jerry is the guy on the beach with a metal detector.

Compared to last year, it is a very nice off-season.

True, it seems nothing they have done moves the needle. And I can see why many fans think that way.
However, I can see why some think it did.

When you step back, take off the blinders, rather if you are pro or con on the team, and the FO. It really has been a decent off-season. And much to be excited about.
I mean, what else could have they done to make the naysayers, say any different. Sign some high price FA's, only to say they over paid.

Bring in HC X instead of Brian, only to say, should have got HC Y, while others say HC Z.

We got some young coaches, all with different ideas to improve the team. BS seems to be building a team with high character, which translates into team continuity. Changing the culture.

Fans will always dislike what the FO does, because it is not what they want them to do. Many fans do not take into account the entire team structure of the roster and salary cap, as we do not know the inner workings.

Do I wish thy done a few things different, yes. But I am not going to let it ruin my morning coffee.
I think the team's issues weren't going to be solved with just one draft. They really needed at least two off-seasons to truly address things since they bargain shop in free agency rather than go for it. I think this draft, while not perfect, was darn good given all the team's needs/issues.
