All year we have known that the D-line and secondary were our weak link this year, and we needed a predominantly defensive draft going forward.
Re-thinking about that today, and with a little luck, it may not be as bad as I, and others have previously thought.
D-line, I still think our first pick should be an edge rusher - but, if Lawrence, Irving, Mayowa, Tapper and dare I say it Gregory, all return, and they should... Along with Collins, Thornton, Crawford - do they bring back McClain ? Plus J.Smith, I expect him to be ready by training camp. We will have decisions at safety and CB (I don't see Carr back) Plus we have 4 safety's with 2 being FA's. The defense may not be in need of the huge over-haul I for one thought would be needed.
Of course health will be a huge factor - Smith, Tapper, Lawrence etc. And do they/can they trust Gregory.
Still DE, CB, LB'er and maybe Safety on the defensive side, and depending on if they choose to re-sign McClain - A 1-tech.
Not even looking at offense yet.
But a decent nucleolus seems to be here to continue building around, which is not how I saw it to start this season : )

The front office will be looking at Jaylon and Tapper as part of the 2017 draft, therefore the fans should as well, or else they will be severely upset and disappointed if 2 of our top 3 picks are on O.

The needs are:
1. True #1 WR.

2. DE or CB. They have Scandrick and Brown returning at CB. Claiborne can't be counted on to stay on the field and Carr is not getting any better with age. The have some possibilities at DE but should not get lulled into counting on guys like Gregory and Tapper.

Can't justify receiver over defense. Can't do it. Receivers don't win games. You should know that. Go solidify the defense.

Michael Irvin won games.

The Cowboys are structured such that WR is a bigger need than it might be on some teams.

I know it sounds lame but you have to take the best player and take the defender if all things are equal.

I imagine the best player available for us is going to be a corner but im just guessing obviously.

Too early to tell
Let's see how Gregory plays
Irving is up and down and is a FA
Lawrence may be done or at least not a key pressure player

I would still go DE in Rd 1 and another starting caliber DE/DT

When I think about it, Irving seems to be following the same curve as T.Crawford - and I'm not sure it's a good thing. Remember when we drafted Crawford in 3rd. round he was a 3/4 DE. Then this team switched to the 4/3 and he just wasn't a DE in end that scheme - or, hadn't been coached for that scheme. Each of his first few year's it was bulk up in the off-season, no, slim down next off-season, no, we are going to make you a 3-tech. bulk back up ! Not really fair on the guy, but done out of necessity - I guess. Learning new positions each year.
For Irving it's 3-tech - no, DE, no 3-tech .... I would hope this off-season they evaluate which position is best for the player - SDE in my opinion. And let him really learn the position and stay there.
Note he has had a "break out game' this year first as a 3-tech and last week as a SDE. To me, he's better suited with his size and length as a SDE.
For these guys it's do you want a jack of all trades, or a master of one !

Yep. No matter what the club needs a killer edgerusher in the next draft. The draft must focus on the defense. The offense is set and solid but could use a burner at wideout.

After adding Smith, Collins, Tapper and Brown this year (Frazier?) I wasn't buying into a over-haul any more. We add 4 or 5 more high quality players in the draft like we did this year and we are set. Should we add another 2-3 more via FA we are golden!

I always enjoy your posts. However, Mike was what people saw on the highlight reels. His TD's were part of a much bigger picture set up by the best OL in the history of the NFL and supported by decoys like Emmitt and Jay and finished by a supurb HC and of course Norv Turner. Defense wins the big game and THOSE TEAMS HAD A GREAT ONE. The club certainly needs to focus on getting much tougher defensively in the next off season.

If you think we're adding that many players on D prepare to be disappointed. Adding 6-8 players is overhauling the D. Not needed, nor is there room on the roster for that many.

That wouldn't be overhauling and it is definately needed. Not all the guys we have now are pro bowl types. We need to upgrade the overall talent if we want a better defense. Not to mention we need to replace the players that are leaving. In fact, adding 6-7 players may not be enough.

Which 6-7 guys do you see gone on D?

This defense is set to have a bunch of players leave. Mo, Carr and Church are UFAs, as is Jack Crawford, Justin Durant, Gachkar, Terrell McClain and J.J. Wilcox.

We'll likely re-sign just a few of those guys. There's going to be a lot of holes to fill. Granted, not all of them will be addressed through the draft.

There won't be any blue chippers on defense as late as the Cowboys will pick.
Do not reach for a position of need and take BPA regardless of position.
