Which 6-7 guys do you see gone on D?

DL: Jack Crawford, Ryan Davis, Terrell McClain
LB: Kyle Wilber, Justin Durant
DB: Brandon Carr and/or Morris Claiborne, Barry Church and/or J.J. Wilcox

That's 7 if we re-sign a CB and a S.

Randy Gregory is also a possible minimum one year suspension and DeMarcus Lawrence's back is very worrisome going forward.

There won't be any blue chippers on defense as late as the Cowboys will pick.
Do not reach for a position of need and take BPA regardless of position.

Agreed.

Patch every hole possible prior to the draft during free agency and try to draft the board as purely as possible.

Don't reach for need or gamble on injured players or character risks.

We will need to add good players, I don't care which side of the ball they line up on.

McClain should be resigned unless he wants big money.

That wouldn't be overhauling and it is definately needed. Not all the guys we have now are pro bowl types. We need to upgrade the overall talent if we want a better defense. Not to mention we need to replace the players that are leaving. In fact, adding 6-7 players may not be enough.
Absolutely, Marinelli has been getting the short shaft since he's been here because he gets so much out of what his given,
Imagine what he could produce with high level talent. Boom.

That's a narrative that's constantly trotted out but I think it's a bit of his own making.

He's had input into the personnel but has asked for certain types and passes on others. I (along with many others) disagree with his apparent distaste for big space eaters at the 1-tech.

Agreed completely. I had doubts about him but he has proven to be an excellent DC that works this bunch about as good as they could be worked. They give up yardage but not so many points. Remarkable really.

Marinelli might be and probably is a team player.Seeing the results of the first round select this year how could anybody
have a problem with Zeek. Still regardless of how you label this particular dynamic they spent heavy on the line [as they should]
So let's feed the other animal now,the defense.

Agreed.

The defense desperately needs an influx of talent across the board but especially the line.

I always enjoy your posts. However, Mike was what people saw on the highlight reels. His TD's were part of a much bigger picture set up by the best OL in the history of the NFL and supported by decoys like Emmitt and Jay and finished by a supurb HC and of course Norv Turner. Defense wins the big game and THOSE TEAMS HAD A GREAT ONE. The club certainly needs to focus on getting much tougher defensively in the next off season.
Good post.

I lived through those times. I even attended training camp in 92, 93 and 95. The offense was the identity of those teams. Yes, the defenses were good, but the offense was the driving force and Irvin was Mr. Clutch.

Those defenses had a lot of average guys and several that were good but not really star players. In 92 it was Haley and Ken Norton as the stars.

Absolutely true. Ole Jerry has been trying to recapture that magic for 20 yrs. It seems like finally, its coming true! Its been a long time coming. I am seeing SB's in the near future. I always thought that Lett and Tolbert where hugely under rated especially Lett. He was a tough and hardnosed player who never got the credit he really deserved because of the comical blunders he occasional committed! Man o man...those were great times.;).

Not expected.

Dallas opted to sign NT Cedric Thornton to decent money as a free agent last off-season instead of looking to extend Terrell McClain.

Both players are 28 years old, so I'd prefer to add a young NT to groom for a season or two behind Thornton.

we have to help the D that should not even be debated it is just how the front office goes about is what should be debated. for me it is edge rusher and corner with for good a mix of BPA thrown in for good measure

Since it keeps getting mentioned to not forget about our injured 2016 picks, I want to throw out a nice little write-up that was done about Tapper that got me excited. Hopefully, he will stay healthy and live up to his potential.

Agree. Great players make the players around them better and I can't remember when the Cowboys have had too many great players the same position. People thought they had an extra quality player when Leary was the backup but that soon ended when Collins got injured. Get great players and everything else will work out.

Leave the injury and character risk players for the 4th round and later.

It would be great if is injury problem is resolved next season because I thought he was a steal otherwise.

In researching his condition, it appears that the bones in that area of the back have these micro-fractures and with an active person, especially a young person, they just never get a chance to heal completely. It appears that it can be resolved with a long period of inactivity and sometimes a brace is involved. Reports indicated that Tapper has been wearing a brace and was required to stay in-active for a few months.

Its funny to think back now and look at it, I remember most excited about Collins and Tapper during the draft. Hope the young man can come back fully healed !

My first two picks would be the best WR/Defender. We need another weapon on offense, and a top WR could help us get there and free up zeke from being box in resulting in helping the defense.
