Thinking ahead Guys, what could we get for Spears from Parcells next year?

Everyone hates on Spears because he is not a sack machine. But in a 3-4 the DE is not supposed to be...it is the OLB's job to get sacks. The DE's are supposed to eat up blocks and stop runs which is exactly what Spears does...and he does it very well. He is a solid player at a spot where we need a solid player. That makes him a keeper in my book.

No, we hate Spears because he hasn't performed up to his 1st round pick status. He is a decent DE and I think he's a guy who can stick in this league for a long time -- however, he underachieves. Plain and simple.

Canty and maybe even Ware
Canty and Ware are NOT better against the run than Spears. I know we all think Spears has underacheived because of his low sack numbers, but lets not exaggerate.

Ware is not better against the run?

Have you missed the seemingly 100+ times that Ware holds the edge while being blocked and then shrugs off a blocker to take down the RB either a yard or two back in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage.

Spears gets engaged with a blocker and that's that. If the offensive lineman gets a hold of him you can consider the battle over with.

Ware does everything better than Spears.

Not meaning to call you out, but I think the majority of us on this board are aware of this. It's old news. And being solid shouldnt necessarily make him a keeper. If you can improve, improve.

However, I think we should let Spears play this year out, and see how he does. If we can resign him for fairly cheap, I'm all for it. He is a solid player who is still young. Still room for improvement. But if we can get better quality at DE, do it. A deep Dline rotation is never a bad thing.

I'm not sure Parcells would want him and vice versa, particularly since Spears didn't like playing in Parcells' 2 gap scheme. I'm all for keeping Spears who I thought played quite alright last year, particularly in Sept. and December. Nothing wrong with having a steady starter on the roster as long as you're not overpaying him, which Dallas isn't doing.

YAKUZA

I wouldn't mind keeping Spears for the right price as he is a solid rotation guy. I think someone will pony up for $5M/year in which case I think we should pass. I wouldn't want to give him any more than $3M/year.

For all those who think he is a BUST should compare him to average level of production that is gotten out of the #20 pick - I bet he has been quite a bit more productive overall than the average pick in the bottom half of the first round. He may not have become what we had envisioned, but he has been quite solid.
