Thinking ahead: Is there a way to recruit Andrew Luck?

Calm down naysayers and play along or just ignore me please, I just think if there is even a small chance he could be obtained in the future, then the Cowboys should try to make it happen, after all he's a Texas boy. This isn't a now move nor is it a knock on Romo, so don't take it that way, its about planning for the future and the kind of thing I would be thinking about if I was a GM.

If I understand correctly, Andrew Lucks rookie contract expires in 2015 but has a fifth-year team option and then Indy could franchise him for two more years which if the Colts were forced to take this path by Luck, then I believe he would be a free agent at the end of the 2018 season.

This lines up pretty nicely with where you would expect Romo to be at the end of his career in Dallas (hopefully he stays healthy that long).

Problem is I don't think there is any way for a team to recruit a player from another team and even if there were, Luck would have to be convinced to leave. Having said that, if there's a way to do this without breaking any rules, I think they should start sowing those seeds now. Its a long shot but I think its worth the effort because it doesn't cost anything to try (assuming no rules are broken).

My questions:

* Is there even anything one team can do to make it known they would be interested in a player on another team if he became available that isn't tampering?

* Can Jerry make a bunch of public statements swooning over Luck and saying he'd love to see him in a Cowboys uniform when Romo retires?

* Could Dez and the Oline recruit him at the pro bowl by encouraging him to pull a Lebron James and leave Indy when his contract is up?

I'd use any legal means possible to start planting a seed in Lucks mind, he seems like a loyal kid but I can't help but believe he wouldn't like to follow in the foot steps of Staubach, Aikman, etc and have the star on his helmet.

Yes there is.

But it will take an attack by the Expendables on the franchise known as the Colts, an American James Bond who can sneak into the NFL headquarters and recode the computer to give Dallas 100 million in cap space, and a man behind the star willing to break the rules to get Luck for the days when Romo is retired on the links.

Frankly, I think Jerry is up to it. Now how do we get the rest of this group on the same page?

Queue Bond music now.

You would have better chances spending all of your paycheck on lottery tickets.

You next best chance would be to get Jerry to give you 2 billion and then you could buy the Colts and trade Luck to the Cowboys for a 2039 7th round pick.

No. It would be tampering.

* Can Jerry make a bunch of public statements swooning over Luck and saying he'd love to see him in a Cowboys uniform when Romo retires?

No. Again that is tampering. Team officials can't make any of those types of statements publicly. They can say he is a great player in response to a question but that all.

* Could Dez and the Oline recruit him at the pro bowl by encouraging him to pull a Lebron James and leave Indy when his contract is up?

Yes, but that would never happen while Romo is still here unless Romo has announced his retirement.

The only way to recruit Andrew Luck is to hope Jim Irsay builds such a toxic environment that Luck doesn't want to stay there.

You just need to merge these 2 guys into 1.

I'm pretty sure Luck would have to become a free agent before Dallas could even say something about wanting him, and Indy is never going to let him leave until he either falls off the wagon entirely or retires.

Besides, you can't just say 'hey man, become a free agent and we'll sign you'. That sort of thing requires a contract. What if Luck agreed, then Dallas ended up taking another guy, leaving Luck out of the job he wanted? It just would never happen that way.

The timing of his potential free agency also matches pretty well with the likely end of Brady's and Manning's (x2) careers...

and the line would be long of others looking to sign him. Luck is not going anywhere for a good long time.

Definitely, thats why I mentioned the two franchise seasons, I believe after two seasons of the franchise tag, the player becomes a free agent. He could refuse to sign a contract and force the Colts to use the franchise tag or release him.

Thx, I though that was the case and if a great QB was available via draft pick, that would throw a kink in the plan (but in a good way).

You don't see players moving around much on their own terms like you do in the NBA and I guess that's because the rules are substantially different.

Eli Manning and Elway are the only players I recall that forced where they wanted to go and it sounds like the only way this could happen is if Luck was the one that wanted to do this and the Cowboys were in the market.

Right and he'd have a ton of options if he wanted to leave Indy.

He doesn't strike me as that type of person and seems like he would stay loyal to Indy

No way really unless the Colts start to crater in a major way...

I don't think thats necessary, he could simply not want to live in Indy and want to play elsewhere. He's a good enough player where he could force his way out and still have a ton of teams interested

0% chance.......Jerry would have better LUCK trying to sign some other Texan like Brees, Griffin, Foles, Dalton, Keenum or even Manziel. All kidding aside, I certainly hope he has a plan on getting Romo's replacement----would be a crime to hand over the keys to a Maserati to a (insert name of recent failures here). You gots to have a QB in this league. And after all his previous failures, he just fell into finding Romo as a FA and after thought. So good L.U.C.K.

LOL, see what I did there.

perhaps, but he doesn't strike me as that type of guy. instead, he seems to be the sort that sticks with his team until the job gets done (e.g., Super Bowl).
