This is why the Cowboys keep drafting TE's

He may not be good, but he is being *productive*, which is something we never got with him. You can fault the player, or you can fault the team. Using logic, it's hard to fault the player when he produces elsewhere but not here.

Agreed. He's a good player which I've said all along. He blocks extremely well and is now making some plays in the passing game. He's not all pro but he's a pretty good TE in a offense full of talented and big tall WRs/

I think most people understand the benefit of having a "hybrid" TE. The amazing part is that the coaching staff has still not found a way to utilize two TE sets after years of trying. If Escobar was drafted as a pass catcher, why isn't he out there catching passes? He's actually playing less snaps now than earlier in the season, shouldn't it be the other way around? Does Escobar have 2nd round talent or is it that the staff doesn't know how to use his talent? I find it amazing that we could have used that 2nd round pick for a player that could have been a benefit to the team here and now.

Fasano and Bennett were/are not hybrid TEs. They are like Witten. But I agree, why isn't he getting more snaps. Why aren't we using the 12 and 13 more often? Where he was drafted was a product of his talent and where he fit with the rest of the move TEs in the draft which were the vast majority of them. It's not his fault he's not being used unless he sucks which means both he and Hanna suck. There are a lot of head scratchers on offense. Enough in fact that they have moved me from finally starting to be a Garrett convert to one who's starting to wonder a lot.

None. But people need to stop saying Bennett is good. He isnt and never has been

my goodness if you don't think bennett's blocking is sorely missed this year i dont know what to tell you. the cowboys need to find a good to great blocking tight end next offseason to make this thing work.

How many game changing TEs are there in football? How many teams are able to get 2 really good TEs?

The 2 TE theory is a sound one on paper. But you have to remember how hard it is to play TE. You have to start with human beings that are much larger than average. Then that person also has to be a good pass catcher. Then that person also had to be a good blocker. I just don't think there's that many people in America with that unique mix of size, speed, power, and catching ability.

Not only is he good, but he's one of the best blocking TE's in the game. Which makes his receiving stats that much more impressive. Bennett was a guy that had an attitude issue not an ability to play solid football issue.

He was amongst the highest rated players on their board when their selection came up. The end.

Why was he so highly rated on our draft board when he provides no immediate production value to the next season and as a future starting TE due to his boyish strength and very average measurables?

I hear ya, most of that type of talent is involved in the NBA.

bennett is being utlized better, if the team cant make use of that, not his problem. Chicago is using him the best way, at the end zone going for the ball, Chicago figured out, COwboy fans figured it out, Cowboys coaches didnt.

I agree, it's a head scratcher. Apart from the fact that this staff either doesn't know how to utilize 12 sets or develop TE, why do they keep trying to force the issue. Using the the Pats and Saints as examples, neither team forced the issue with their now star TE's. The Pats starting using 12 sets out of necessity, after losing Moss they had no real pass catching threats outside of Welker. They had just drafted 2 TE's with their plethora of draft picks because they were in desperate need of one in the hopes at least one of them would develop. As what a good offensive staff should do, they adapted to the talent they had and developed a scheme to utilize their talents. I don't think they expected quite the level of success especially so early. In hindsight it seems like a no brainer, but honestly how many rookies have that kind of impact so quickly. In New Orleans case, they drafted Graham in hopes to develop him, he was very raw with little football experience. Again, he developed quickly, more than they had expected. In both cases, their TE's are the best players on their offenses and each team adapted and started rebuilding their offensive scheme around them, and rightfully so.

We have Dez and this team needs to do better in building the offense to Dez's talent. I am not against in finding that dynamic TE, but when we use a 2nd round pick, he needs to be playing now. These days you don't take players in the 2nd round to develop, unless it's a QB.

I don't care about having a traditional TE or not. I do care that we have either a fullback or F back who can block on the dive etc. I agree it's hard to run inside now but you have to have a reasonable threat esp if you run a vertical offense. I don't lament the loss of the traditional TE/inline TE that much as we do use one or two extra tackles in some formations or at times just an extra tackle with an inline TE. You must have a F back or fullback on occasion.

You should be a scout with your perfect ability to know the future.

Ok, he's somewhat productive, at times, but he's not 'good'. Is his third team the charm?

11 catches in last 4 games, one TD in last 8 games. And now he's chirping about his catches...

"We have called plenty of plays in his direction, targeting him, and he has been covered, so we just throw it to somebody else." That's a quote from his OC this week

Fasano may not be and I would tend to agree but Bennett was drafted specifically for his athleticism and ability to be a redzone nightmare for defenses. That's almost exactly what they said for Escobar.

If Bennett doesn't fit the mold, then what exactly is the hybrid TE?

Escobar's pick cannot be justified in terms of this season. The coaches haven't even attempted to put him into the offensive playbook outside of some the earlier games. I just don't see why a team that is essentially in a win now mode would draft a developmental pick like that who by the team's own admission can't block and has a Hall of Famer ahead of him on the depth chart.

I guess it's more your opinion than fact that we are in a win now mode.
Everything JG does is build longterm and not shortterm. And thats why JJ is giving him every chance he can. Because he still believes in Garrett's way.
The fact that Excobar hasn't played alot this season doe not mean the pick was a bad one. We can afford to give him time to develop. I see him drafted as Wittens replacement. And Witten will be around another year or two.

I agree they thought he would be a hybrid TE but he just didn't develop into the role. He's probably fast enough at speed but I don't see him accelerating fast enough and he doesn't get in and out of his breaks fast enough. His hands were too inconsistent and his route running was poor. It see a move TE as one who is a big receiver. If they can serve as an H or F back then that's great. Most aren't going to be inline blockers though.

Escobar is slow (4.82 Forty) and not a dominant blocker, not a good combination if you ask me. He may be as good as John Phillips, with the difference being that he cost us a second round pick as opposed to a 6th round pick for Phillips. The jury is still out on him but so far it looks like a major reach. Jordan Reed who the Commanders took in the third round looks to be a better player so far into their rookie campaigns.

Escobar's top speed is higher than Witten's.
Escobar: 18.94 mph
Witten: 17.93 mph
