Pick # 217 that was used on Rico Gathers who never had any chance at making the roster could have been used on a player that could have been useful here.

The Giants for the second year in a row have found a quality defensive end in the rookie free agent pool. Last year it was Kerry Wynn this year its Romeo Okwara.

With the 6th round pick #217 Dallas took Gathers while Okwara just sat there. Now no one drafted him so something about him was a turn off, but if you are defensive needy team which is putting it mildly concerning this team How do you not gamble on the end instead of guy who has never played football.

I simply do not understand this logic. Okwara had a great camp in NY and made the team. I do not know if he will dress on gameday this week but I bet he does since they plan to use JPP and Owa Ziggy as interior pass rushers in the nickel and other sets.

This just really bugs me and I would love to know who made that call, I asked broaddus and he said Dallas had Okwara on the board and chose gathers.

That is nuts. It reminds me of 2006 when the saints had success with marques colston and Parcells was mad and told the media during a PC that he had specifically sent scouts to hofstra and they didn't recognize Colston as a draft able talent.

Instead of having a guy like Okwara rushing as a reserve this sunday we will have kyle wilber and we will have to block okwara.

I simply do not understand decisions like this. Its completely void of reason. Drafting gathers when players who could still help were available is a problem, I am convinced since Garrett has taken over he has surrounded himself with people who can not recognize defensive talent. Something needs to change in regards to drafting defensive players.

Actually Kerry Wynn was a second year player last year and followed up his rookie season sack total of 1.5, with a whopping zero last year.

he is a good role player. Yes your right they signed him in 14. He had 53 tackles and a guy like that on a rookie UDFA contract is perfect for a roster like ours which is salary top heavy.

You need to wait to see what happens in 2 or 3 years.

If you're going to lament draft picks, then do it with players drafted in 2014 because they've had time to fail or succeed.

FYI, the success rate of 5th round picks is 3.8%. It is likely even lower for 6th round picks. I like drafting players with high upsides over players that might be more ready but are very limited. I much prefer Rico Gathers over Caleb McSurdy.

of course you have to wait, but look at the roster right now, a guy like okwara would make the team and help right away.

You can do this with literally every late round draft pick that doesn't make it.

That's why you didn't choose to make your comparison with Anthony Brown who looks like a really good player in the 6th round.

no that is not it at all, my point is they had okwara as a draft able guy and on their board and they are desperate for defense and they chose a guy who didn't even play college football.

Its gambling on a guy like gathers who you know has no chance over a guy who could play a lot of snaps at a position of weakness. had they drafted another defensive player at 217 I wouldn't be saying anything. this is about gathers and him having zero chance at making the roster

I agree that we don't use our late picks like we should....we need to be throwing draft picks at positions of need and for guys that have dropped significantly. We could have used the Jackson and Gathers picks for S, LB, DE and been much more effective IMO.

what bugs me is that we are going into this week with only 8 DL on the roster, with Tapper likely not ready to play cause of injury. but yet we can take 4 RB's and 5 safeties to the game.

we have no idea how many running backs they are taking to the game. Keith smith should be viewed as a special teams player, like danny mccray was. Instead of FB in front of his name it should just say ST.

I imagine the only backs that dress sunday are Zeke, Morris and Dunbar. This will allow them to have smith and smith play special teams and make jackson a luxury and inactive.

and kyle wilber will play end sunday, I would be shocked if tapper is dressed. i have my doubts collins dresses.

I did like how they used 3 of those 4 6th rounders.

I get more upset when they blow the 2nd round picks. Like Escobar and others. Those picks should be long term starters and the hit rate should be very high. And value wise, you can get 20+ 6th rounders for just one 2nd rounder. Painful to mess it up.

Parcells had to be overruled when picking good ol 94

that was a money issue. It wasn't stephen and jerry identifying the better talent, they didn't want to deal with the postons. When they explained to parcells that he would hold out and missed time they all agreed on ware.

broaddus has been telling this story since 08 and people still can't get it right.

You better hide this from pebble.

Our front office is terrible because they didn't get a player you liked! Got it...

Add passing on Aaron Rodgers twice to your whine fest! Hell that was Parcells too... Sorry pebble

It's the logic of a risk-taker looking to strike it big and is willing to lose with regularity in pursuit of big payoff.

I agree, just watched Garretts presser - I sat there afterwards and had this thought.
Are they keeping all these RBs. FBs and extra Safeties - to try and build up STs ?
Sure seems like it. Like they are deciding - we have astrong offence, weak defence, lets bolster the STs unit - maybe that will help.
I think this defence line is in big trouble, and they do nothing ....

rod smith should be viewed as a ST player. Keith can actually block a little for all the handwaving Broaddus did on the one he missed.

I am talking about when he was drafted.

I quoted a guy posting about how many defensive pro bowls players drafted by coaches made it to.

I don't even care about Wares release right now.

If he was to stay around and continue to be effective he needed a Miller type player on the other side of him.

im not calling the front office terrible because it is not and this is not a whine fest. this is a simple thing to me.

A defensive end from a major program that you clearly studied when taking Jaylon Smith who can help right away.

or a college basketball player who maybe someday could dress on a roster for an nfl game.

Nothing like Aaron Rodgers, Dallas switched defenses that spring and marcus spears and ware allowed them to do that. It was a pick that made sense, it was completely logical.

that is not my point. the point is gathers had zero chance.
