Thought on Robert Blanton signing

With the timing of the signing, I kinda wonder if they have zeroed in on a day 2 offensive prospect. Making that selection, you are possibly missing out on a contributor at a defensive position.

Its a reach, as Robert Blanton is very minor transaction. But if they are looking at taking say a JuJu Smith-Schuster or a Julie'n Davenport in the third round, you may sign a Robert Blanton thinking you aren't sure you can get your contributing safety in the 4th and beyond.

Timing of the addition is interresting to me, even for a minor signing

Honestly a camp body shouldn't be too thought provoking. I mean I hope he is more than that, but the bad angles I see him take while covering really need to be fixed...

Probably Smith-Schuster. He stated in an interview that Dallas and the Rams seemed most interested in him. Irvin speaks highly of him also.

I look at this move just like signing Byron Bell - low cost insurance. Signing guys like this means you have no reason at all to draft someone who isn't at the top of your draft board.

Blanton isn't a guy you want starting but in a worse case scenario he does if you don't draft someone and if Heath doesn't win the starting job. You get him as insurance - and with the Rule of 51 he only costs about 400K against your salary cap.

He is good ST player and provides depth
Shouldn't have any bearing on draft. If a safety you like comes up, take him
We lost 2 so we need 2

I can live with Smith-Schuster. I dont think he brings anything to the table we dont have, but Bryant has missed games the past two season and he is the type of player that can make a difference in those games.

If we go offense somewhere on day 2, id prefer a RT in the third. Maybe Davenport. In this draft you arent getting a walk in starter at RT past the third. But Davenport would your 2018 RT and may even be able to progess enough during the season to fill in late in the season if/when injuries hit

You don't skip drafting a Safety because of Blanton, the point is you don't have to reach for a player because Blanton is there as insurance. If you have a guy like Peppers rated as mid 2nd round pick you don't feel the need to draft him at 28 because the worst case scenario isn't forcing a guy like Kavon Frazier into the starting lineup.

Darren McFadden was the same type of signing in 2015, they wanted to draft a RB but the board didn't fall that way. They were right not to reach for a RB in that draft and DMC did just fine as the veteran fall back.

We've got our safety in the later rounds last year. Kavon Frazier

Blanton is likely the backup and we will see significant snaps.

That's the major unknown here. What they think of Frazier and can he contribute to base defense? If they have plans for him to get snaps on D, you may be right.

Don't think it has anything to do with it. I mean lol at the depth. Byron Jones, Heath, Frazier and "Showers"
I really would have liked Rashad Johnson actually but yeah, depth signing, special team contributer, will see some snaps on defense like a Wilcox Role.

imo this is strictly a ST signing and wont affect the draft at all.

PRetty much insurance. If a draft pick we like falls to us we'll scoop him. Rather not reach for a safety. Bpa they're thinking. Also think they're banking on Jeff Heath. Corner and dline seem to be our top priorities

I think they wanted Blanton back when they brought him in, but he was probably looking for a richer deal. Dallas knew it needed to add a vet safety when both Church and Wilcox left, leaving the team with just Jones, Heath and Frazier.

He beats out Butler without breaking a sweat at the very least.

Still tough to spend that kind of draft capital at WR, but yes, Bryant is very likely to get hurt. Again.

Plus it would be nice to steal a WR1 in the second or third round.

Plus Bryant has 3 years left on his deal. Gives you the opportunity to groom a guy who may be the guy to take over once Bryants contract is up

I am inviting a beat down from the faithful, but I don't care.

I will be surprised if Bryant is able to produce to justify his compensation three years from now and I have little doubt we will start getting more serious about life after Dez after this season.
