Oh they have the ability to set the edge but maybe the play calls the scheme the inability is the inability to call the right place and to instill it into your player's head that that needs to be done instead of hey just go head hunt for the quarterback because that is what Dan Quinn has done here... He's accepted it and he shouldn't.... I think tanks a great guy to set the edge and that's why they run away from his side a lot of the times people don't even give him any credit this dudes a lot better than he's been advertised around here people wanted tank cut years ago they don't realize how good he is in all three phases he's blocking passes he's setting the edge he's getting sacks and pressures when needed just because he's not putting up 14 sacks a year somehow he gets dismissed around here but I believe Sam Williams is pretty good but he doesn't play enough he's still maturing but Micah Parsons the light is shining on him and he's being allowed to be BMOC without any repercussions from the coats the coaches need to go in and says dude part of your job it's stopping the run so you better be looking for the run first and then go after the quarterback it's part of the scheme...
Parsons is terrible at setting the edge in the run game, matter of fact teams run right at him with great success. In my opinion, he needs to move off the ball to allow him to run and chase. He will still have plenty chances rushing the passer. This is what Quinn did against the 49ers in last year's playoff game, where they did an excellent job against the run, until they wore down late.

Armstrong has really struggled this year, Fowler is more of a pass rusher, Sam Williams has the skillset, but he is a dumb player that hurts his team, more then he helps it. Maybe Golston, but he hasn't shown much since he was drafted.

We can not dominate a running team. Best we can do is limit them by being on point and not missing any tackles. Buffalo would have been different had we done that.

We have heard that this defense has been built to play with a lead and stop the pass. Problem is, unless you have the greatest show on turf Rams offense, there will be games that the offense does struggle that the defense is going to have to be able to defend both the run and the passing game. Since Dan Quinn has arrived, we have had this discussion about the defense inability to consistently defend the run:

-Personnel is a big part of the issue. Playing with a smaller/quicker front with hybrid LB/Safeties behind them causes mismatches defending the run. Playing this style, you must beat blockers to a spot or get engulfed by blockers. Adding a player like Hankins has helped, but it's not enough.

-Scheme has done this defense no favors. Not only does Quinn like to use those hybrid defenders, but he calls a ton of twists/stunts that open up huge rushing lanes. Yes, they help getting to the QB, but they kill your run defense.

Some ideas how to fix in the future:

-Adding bigger personnel from the defensive line and the linebacker positions. Finding a legitimate mike linebacker, might be the biggest priority need. Lve's career might be over and he was more of a weakside linebacker. Find a true mike linebacker that excels with taking on and shedding blockers.

-Perhaps employing more of a 3-4 front on early downs. The 3-4 alignment was originally devised to do a better job stopping the run. Get big lineman who can occupy blockers and allow your quick players to attack the football.
What good is it having a 3-4 scheme when your Ends cannot can hold up ?
Whether it's DE, DTs or LBs, that front seven has to be able to anchor and stall the runs., penetration at the line,
the angles, the one on one blocks, not over pursuing, read the correct keys, and bring physicality to that area.

And as Donnie Yueng/ Ip Man says in Ip man movie... " it's not about Style ... its' about You "

Here's a name for you all. Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Yup, that Jeremiah Trotter. His son is coming out and is a middle line backer around 240 ish pounds and same attitude as his dad.
Expected to go late first/early second, so would take a big commitment. But talk about a attitude adjustment here !
Overshois an Olber. We need a thumper with an attitude - like this guy .....
I like the idea, but Trotter Jr is short (6'0") for a MLB. We need a taller and bigger MLB type.

Is it worth weakening the pass rush to improve the run defense when we really lost one game because of the run defense. And that game the offense struggled. Mazi was drafted to do both but he’s a rookie. No way we spend a high pick on another tackle. I could see a safety if he can cover and support the run. Any LB you get has to be able to cover. The day of the big thumper who just stops the run is over. I’d love a 240 LB in the middle but he has to be able to cover or he’s a liability

We would need a 5 Tech DE and bigger linebackers. Heard Baldinger on the fan this morning talking about going with a 5 man line, which he said we used last season to help against the run. That interesting.

You are right, we don't new a bunch of star, but rather quality role players. These type of players are easy to find and won't break the bank.
We should be paying the DLine big money if we can't find them in the draft and going w/ ordinary CB's.

Just get the right DT in here and it improves both. Immensely.

The playoffs are about ball control with a defense and a running attack.

The Cowboys cleared out their starting RB and never replaced him. This present patchwork is suspect.

The Cowboys had the answer in the draft and decided to take a TE that was older than Jake Ferguson. Apparently, they couldn't wait another year for the 7 catches he has contributed this season.

I'm biased because I love the 3-4 defense, but that's my offseason tip. Hankins at nose, Mazi at DE, Parsons as the edge LB. I guarantee it will bring more of Mazi and Parson's strengths out.

After that, going to need another 2005 draft. If didn't have to worry about offensive line picks with Zack and Tyron getting up there in age, I'd say go for it.

I don't think you need a whole overhaul as this defense will still use a hybrid type of scheme. To be able to play both, you would have add some personnel, but don't need an entire draft class to fix it. Remember, this team also has to fix their rushing offense as well.

Keep on going back to the 49ers playoff loss last season, where Parsons played off the ball. They held their great rushing attack in check for 3 quarters and got worn out late cause of the offense not doing anything. Add a legitimate DE and another Big Linebacker and this run defense can greatly improve. It would also help the defense if the offense can run the football more and keep them fresh.
