Went to the game today. It was pretty chilly today, around 40 degrees I think. I probably should have added an extra layer of clothing, but I managed. My wife on the other hand suffered greatly and had to get herself an overpriced hot chocolate. Anyway, on to my thoughts...
Arrowhead: It's not much different than I remember from the game in 1998. They've remodeled it a little bit, but for the most part it's the same old stadium. I do have to say the PA guy is very annoying, as are some of the silly antics they do at the stadium (acting like Wade Phillips after every first down, can't count yards at all, yelling a players name after even average plays, some stupid introduction video they had before the game, etc). It's just really silly and got old very fast.
The fans: I'm going to come right out and say that I sincerely believe the Cowboys had more fans in the stands than the Chiefs did today. I definitely saw more blue than red and would say the split was probably 55-45 or somewhere close to that. While the Chiefs fans had more to cheer about for most of the game, the presence of the Cowboys fans didn't go unnoticed. Late in the game after Dallas tied it up and the Chiefs were deep in their own territory the Cowboys fans came alive, particularly at that end of the field, and it had an obvious effect on the Chiefs offense. The Cowboys fans got louder during this part of the game than the Chiefs fans did at ANY point in the game. People in my section even got a "DEFENSE" chant started which was picked up very fast by fans in other sections. The Cowboys players were feeding off of the energy and acknowledged and encouraged the fans to keep going. Unfortunately a stupid BS penalty stopped that.
Special Teams: Folk missed one again this week, which was very frustrating. Buehler did fine on kickoffs, but not as well as he was during pregame where every single kick was going deep into the endzone. McBriar didn't do anything special, and had a few shorter ones too, but nothing drastic. Coverage was pretty good for the most part. The return guys had some problems holding onto the ball. Crayton was just flat out awful, first trying to get one off a bounce only to have it hit him and luckily go out of bounds, followed by a muff on his next attempt. Ogletree got lucky not to lose a fumble on a kickoff as well. These things just cannot happen! Ratliff is awesome too.
Offense: Oh how frustrating this unit is. Never did the Chiefs really do anything to stop the offense. Constant penalties created long yardage situations and stalled way too many drives. Top that off with some dropped passes, a maybe shoulda been fumble, and a botched snap, and you have the makings of a disaster. At one point I wanted to run down to the field to give Crayton and Austin a good kick to the junk.
Romo was very good (not perfect) this game and made some great reads and throws. I was very happy to see him play like this and move around well as well. Austin turned his game around and became a beast who could not be stopped, and all is forgiven for the earlier mistakes. After his catch on the jump ball he was just pumped up and Romo was as well and that really got them going in the 2nd half.
Choice was very good breaking off the TD, and the run in OT, I'm sure glad we don't rely on Tyson Thompson anymore for our 3rd back. Barber was solid as well.
Defense: Ware finally got sacks!! Not quite the 4 I predicted, but it's a start. I wish the defense had brought more heavy blitzes than they did because I know the Chiefs suck at blocking those, but outside of the final drive in regulation, and the stupid TD to Vrabel (HELLO?? How do you not see that coming???) the D I thought played a great game. The Chiefs got about 10 total yards on their first 2 scoring drives that I'm 99% sure they don't get if not for the gift turnovers that they had nothing to do with. They really only had one drive the entire game, and that was the one at the end.
Basically, it was clear as day the Cowboys were a vastly superior team who just couldn't stop kicking their own ***. Thankfully they were able to pull it out in the end, and now it matters not.
On to pictures.....
