Through Week 4 (2024), Cowboys team rushing ranks dead last (32nd) in the NFL

One wonders why the Dallas Cowboys are struggling to score points through Week 4 of the 2024 season? Look no further than the Cowboys team rushing ranking dead last (32nd) in the NFL. Take a look at the chart statistics...

https://www.espn.com/nfl/stats/team/_/stat/rushing

The Dallas Cowboys team rushing ranks dead last (32nd) in total rushing yards/game average (75.3) with the 2nd lowest rushing yard average (3.5). Only the Giants have a lower rushing yard average (3.4). Plus, the Cowboys are tied for the 2nd lowest rushing TDs (2) so far with Dak having 1 of those rushing TDs on a goal line QB sneak.

Meanwhile, the Ravens rank 1st in total team rushing yards/game average (220.3) thanks to their All Pro RB who Jerry Jones refused to sign via free agency...

While the Titans rank middle of the pack (16) in total team rushing yards/game average (111.3) thanks to a performance like this ex-Cowboy whom Jerry refused to retain after the 2023 season...

Nice job, Jerry... :banghead:

And if you were to ask Jerry and Stephen they would both say “we were behind in a couple of those games and had no choice but to air it out”……..
The rushing game is pitiful but when you’re getting the doors blown off that also has a statistical impact.

To be honest the Cowboys should have signed Pollard to a team friendly extension instead of tagging him in 2023. The Joneses don’t seem to understand the cap sadly. King Henry is great but the Ravens are the perfect running team with their big fulll back, blocking tight ends, and best running quarterback in the history of the game. Not resigning Pollard will haunt us throughout the season.

The divisiveness we are experiencing on so many fronts is causing people to lose all sensibilities. There are fans on this forum that are so angry at Dak's contract, that they will blame everything on that contract. Dak has not been perfect! Guess what? He's never been! And neither has any QB for that matter! But I can not have a football conversation with anyone that scapegoats this run game by laying it at the feet of Dak...as opposed to where it belongs....the Jones boys!

Didn't we try WR by committee a few years ago? Didn't many of us say BEFORE the season say it would not work? How many games did it take our front office to see it would not work?

If you want production without filet mignon at every position, hire the right coach and let him hire his staff and implement a scheme that does not require several all pros. But Jerry wants to micromanage everything and these are the results!!!

When your passing game is all short routes you keep all the defenders near the line of scrimmage. That makes it very difficult to run with whoever may be in the backfield. We need to start going down the field to move the defenders back a little. Then those 2-3 yard runs could become closer to 5-6 yards. And that's really all you need.

I'm thinking the way we have been blown out early may contribute to our rushing rankings.
Of course we are not good at running the ball regardless. I think its much more than just the RB position. I think our line and the blocking schemes are not effective either. I hate to admit it but no way Henry is doing what he does in Baltimore playing in this offense. Its such a cheat code to have Lamar Jackson running these RPO's and the defense always needing to account for him.

Agreed.

Tony Pollard signed a 3 year / $21.7 million dollar contract with the Titans. That's a $7.2 million per year contract.

Derrick Henry signed a 2 year / $16 million contract with the Ravens. That's a $8 million per year contract.

With the Cowboys restructuring contracts for Terence Steele & Zack Martin in August and before CeeDee and Dak got resigned, the Cowboys had $29 million available in cap space. No excuse for not have being able to retain Tony Pollard or signed Derrick Henry.

I've been saying since the season started we don't have any legit deep threat speed on this roster. I don't understand why the Cowboys cut Tyron Billy-Johnson or why they have not brought him back since Billy-Johnson was frequently making deep catches in training camp? It's like this team loves to suffer and make things so unnecessarily hard on themselves.

Just kills me that we didn't get Henry. I'm an eternal optimist, but it's hard to win in the NFL without a run game that, at the very least, the defense has to account for, and I don't think any defense is concerned about us running the football. It makes our QB's job infinitely more difficult, yet he'll bear the brunt of criticism when we don't win. Shoot, he gets criticized when we DO win. Last week, I think there was one QB with a higher RTG than Dak, and that was Goff last night (might be one other, not sure). Watching Goff throw to receivers that were open by 5 yards compared to Dak throwing into tight windows with zero margin for error is just one example of no impact from the run game.

We're not going to mention that Henry wasn't touched that entire 87 yard run? Do you think he would get holes like that if he played for Dallas?

What I will admit is that speed is important on offense - and defense, but on offense Dallas has no speed at RB. There are no threat to break one and take it to the house.

Good backs make o-lines better. Emmitt Smith made the Cowboys 90s o-line, not the other way around. They will even admit this if asked. None of them were considered all world before Emmitt showed up, and no other RBs looked anywhere near as good as Emmitt when they ran behind his same o-line.

The Cowboys would likely be 4-0 had they signed Henry.

Well that's what happens when you are trailing. Run yardage totals are primarily a product of game script, not your ability to run the ball.

Dallas is middle of the pack in EPA.

EPA is garbage guessing. That's not equal to reality or performance by your running backs.
