Cowboys feel good about Doug Free

By and large, the Cowboys' backups have had a bad preseason. LT Doug Free is an exception.

Free has performed well enough that Flozell Adams' backup isn't a big concern. That's a significant chance since the start of training camp, which is why Leonard Davis got some reps at left tackle in the Alamodome.

Free, a fourth-round pick in 2007, has been a bright spot for the second-team offense in all three preseason games. The coaches were particularly pleased with his performance against San Francisco, when he played some against 49ers starting DE Justin Smith.

"He played against the same people Flozell played against some and thought he did a good job," Phillips said. "Couldn't really tell the difference. Now we had some good protection. Flozell had good protection and so did Free. And I thought his run blocking was good."

The Cowboys might still draft a left tackle in April, but with Free's development, that position won't be a glaring need.

Yep...he has been a plus for us this preseason.

Will probably get to play all or most of the game Friday night as well.

Uh oh, Flo! Free is coming for your job!

And can someone tell me when Doug Free isn't the front man for Free Reign?

Want to see him have success against other teams starters, before we get out the annointing oil.

Impossible, burmafrd has assured me several times that there is no evidence he is any good at all.

Ah, just a few months ago the bum had been moved to guard because he couldn't play.

He had 7 sacks last year and is a starter for 49ers. It's not like he is a 3rd stringer or anything.

I want somebody that can shut down Osi twice a year. Sorry, tough critic here.

He did nothing in Cincy, and the Niners gave a huge contract for 7 whole sacks. A bad contract. Whats the fuss about?

maybe you need to go check his career numbers, not sure you are even talking about the same guy...he's had 4 seasons of at least 7.0 sacks, and is consistently around 70-80 tackles per yr...he has 50 1/2 sacks for his career.

he isnt a superstar or anything, but he was/is a quality player

So which is it, you want to see him facing other teams starters or you want to see him facing Osi?

Both, I want this guy to make it, I am hopeful, not sold.
