weeden is already in his 30s lol

Its time to start. We need a successor for times like this. Would be nice to have a young back up QB with hope.

I believe if you have a young starting qb back him up with a older veteran qb. If you have a old vet qb back him up with a young qb that you hope can turn into a starter.

We have 2 old qb's lol

(and no I am not saying Romo suck). He is one of the best qb's in the game. Top 5 I would say.

personally i think its to to take one you think can be a franchise guy, in the first round if need be. We cannot continue to bury our heads in the sand. Romo is awesome but father time and the physical nature of this game waits for no man.

A 1st round QB can sit for a couple of years a la aaron rodgers with little to no pressure and learn from one of the games very best.

We need a true heir apparent.

Could be next year's draft -- here's a few candidates, with resume' still incomplete:

Jones and Barrett - Ohio St.
Boykin - TCU
Kessler - USC
Hogan - Stanford
Kiel - Cincinnati
Goff - Cal
Prescott - Miss St
Cook - Mich St

Cook maybe

Cook's career completion percentage at Michigan State is 58%.

If a guy can't throw for 60% in college, I have my doubts whether or not he'll be good enough in the pros.

For the record -- I thought Tom Brady was mediocre as all get out coming out of Michigan. So my ability to measure Big 10 QBs is questionable.

Right now I see Goff #1 overall. Hackenberg in the top 3. Jones in the top 10. Cook in the top 15. Wentz, Kessler and Kiel in our range.

Unless a QB falls for some reason I don't see a 1st rnd quality QB being there when we pick in the first because I still expect us to pick near the end of the draft, if not the last pick
I do expect a QB to be taken this year but more of a developmental guy
Wouldn't shock me to see a cb taken in the first round this year, but at the end of the round it's all about BPA because the top players at every position is gone

Drafting one too soon is a detriment. Part of drafting one is the low cap hit that accompanies him allows you to go deep in other spots. You lose part of that benefit if one sits for 2-3 years. The Cowboys need to draft one the year before they think Romo is retiring. A year to develop and 4 years of controlled salary as a starter while evaluating if they are the franchise QB of the future. The only way I take one is if a really high ranke QB falls. If Goff somehow drops to the Cowboys I would take him and not look back.

I'm not sure I really like any of these QBs in the draft next year.

Those Ohio State kids definitely have upside, but I'm not sure they fit what the Cowboys do offensively.

I think Goff is the standalone top QB in this class. Probably the top QB if he was in any class after the Luck draft. I'm not sold on any of the others, though Hackenberg has all the tools for someone to take the chance on high.

Not really. A first rounder has a 5 year deal. And the 5th year option for a late first round QB is peanuts. You are still starting him for years years on a rookie deal leaving you plenty of time to evaluate wheather to invest a 2nd contract in him.

We would still get 3 years of the Russell Wilson effect if we draft a QB this year and sit him for two years. Also significantly upgrades the backup spot while we still have Romo

You have to have a really bad team to get a QB who people are universally sold on. And even then you are most likely looking at a Cam Newton or Jameis Winston level guy. Your pretty lucky if your getting a Mathew Stafford and EXTREMELY lucky if your getting a Luck. I agree Goff is the clear cut #2, but its gonna take some seriously bad times to be able to get a guy like that

The Cowboys will draft the best available player, that is their mantra.

If the Cowboys are up in the 1st round of the draft and there is a RB and a QB, who do you take?

Suppose Romo heals and is capable of playing another 4 years? Do you draft a QB high and then train him to play for a different team?

Depends on how long Romo plays. I think he plays another 3 years possibly 4 if you believe him. That leaves you with 1 year of cheap and one year of option. Even a late 1st Rd pick at QB will be a pretty hefty deal. For 2016 a 5th year option for a QB taken 11th-32nd would be 15.9 million. Ideally you want to time it where the future QB only sits 1 or 2 years max and only the Cowboys really know when Romo actually plans to hang them up. Of course thats fluid if an absolute stud falls to them. I still think this next season is a year early.

Its hard to do for sure. It's incredibly rare for a legit QB prospect to fall out of the top 10, let alone in the 20's. It might be better just to wait for a down season either after Romo or in his decline to address it. They should look hard at a better b/u though. I just hope they don't screw around with the position and invest a 1st RD pick in it when the time does come, or the unlikely event presents itself.
