personally i think its to to take one you think can be a franchise guy, in the first round if need be. We cannot continue to bury our heads in the sand. Romo is awesome but father time and the physical nature of this game waits for no man.

A 1st round QB can sit for a couple of years a la aaron rodgers with little to no pressure and learn from one of the games very best.

We need a true heir apparent.

we can say this until we are blue in the face but Jerry will not make that type of investment (1st rounder) while Romo contract is substantial. What needs to happen is Dallas needs to upgrade their backup QB.

Drafting one too soon is a detriment. Part of drafting one is the low cap hit that accompanies him allows you to go deep in other spots. You lose part of that benefit if one sits for 2-3 years. The Cowboys need to draft one the year before they think Romo is retiring. A year to develop and 4 years of controlled salary as a starter while evaluating if they are the franchise QB of the future. The only way I take one is if a really high ranke QB falls. If Goff somehow drops to the Cowboys I would take him and not look back.

Ask Arron Rogers about that

You can't have 2 good QBs in the NFL unless you get lucky late in the draft.

Then you waste 4 years for a couple injury games.

Like I said, very rare. Rodgers is the only elite QB to have fallen like that in recent memory. Brees fell for some reasons(height I believe?). I don't think Wilson or Kaepernick are Elite, but thats just me. Then you have the outliers like Brady and Romo, but all of these are very rare. Odds are if you want one, you have to take one high and even that guarantees nothing.

Dallas learns nothing from history. Entering the 2000 season, nobody thought it was Aikman's final year. Nobody knows when Romo is through. He's getting older with a bad back. The Cowboys must think about the future.

Could be next year's draft -- here's a few candidates, with resume' still incomplete:

Jones and Barrett - Ohio St.
Boykin - TCU
Kessler - USC
Hogan - Stanford
Kiel - Cincinnati
Goff - Cal
Prescott - Miss St
Cook - Mich St

some of them are undraftable to me.

Out of that group I would take Goff, Kessler and maybe Kiel.

Right now I see Goff #1 overall. Hackenberg in the top 3. Jones in the top 10. Cook in the top 15. Wentz, Kessler and Kiel in our range.

agreed - not big on Jones or Cook

Wentz maybe the steal of the draft

Goff is intriguing, but I assume he'll be gone early.

The Cowboys will draft the best available player, that is their mantra.

If the Cowboys are up in the 1st round of the draft and there is a RB and a QB, who do you take?

Suppose Romo heals and is capable of playing another 4 years? Do you draft a QB high and then train him to play for a different team?

you take the QB how many more years are you counting on ROMO playing - if we are lucky enuf to draft a decent QB you don't have to let him walk

Not to wish ill on anyone but if Goff sprained his ankle and missed a few games I wouldn't be too depressed. We need a guy who is capable to hop in the lineup if Romo goes down, with our OL it would not be too difficult. He'd be a heck of a lot better off than Aikman was.

IMO,very rare is a good starting point for something that worked famously. like the old days.
Dont say it cant be done because of the cap, it has been done more then once
