It is not a popular ideal, but it is time to blow this team up and start over. I had rather see a 3-13 team that has the draft picks to start building a quality young team rather than an 8-8 team with an aging core . This core also have contracts that kills any chance of adding needed talent. I say it is time to start trading and cutting the old vets. Take the hit to the salary cap and get the dead money off the books. This team is not one or two players away. They are a whole defense away from having a top team and the offense has holes as well. The coaching staff needs to hit the road, every last one of them. This 8-8 rut has the team in a position where they don't get top talent in the draft and the scouting department is not good enough to find the hidden talent. How many more years should the fanbase cling to this very average core of players?

Other than QB and deep-snapper, they only have 2 players over 30 under contract for 2014, Ware and Witten.

The only thing they have to do to "blow it up" is to cut Ware and his 12.25M base salary. Witten is an option, but his salary is a much more reasonable 5M and he plays 2x or 3x the number of snaps that Ware plays.

They can't cut Romo due to the salary cap impact.

I agree with the notion that they need to get themselves in a more cap friendly situation for the future. If that means cutting some high priced pieces like Ware or Carr....perhaps it needs to happen.

I would ask Ware to take a pay cut before releasing him; he is still serviceable. The key would be to surround him with better players on the d-line.

This is so true, and I agree. It's time...

Need a new coach, and he needs to be able to build it anyway he wants to. I do think Ware is finished. I think they need to eat next year and do what ever cutting they can, to clear the 2015 cap space.

Yes, it would be great if they could cut his 12.25M base salary in half.

Absolutely; but it will never happen as we all know...

I could see blowing it up to some degree. But I can't see them completely starting over. They're not going to get rid of their franchise QB, nor should they, and I don't see Witten going anywhere.

Maybe you could move Ware, if it weren't for the money, just to start getting younger and making some moves on defense but I don't see a lot they're going to do. Dumping Ware, Carr, and Austin gets you a lot of cap penalty money that they can't afford so I'm not sure any of that is a real option.

Which, btw, won't fix the biggest issue which is the piss poor GM.

This! Then use the cut to acquire DT Linval Joseph and DE Jared Allen. I would look at DT Kevin Williams as well if Joseph's price becomes steep.

31.5 million over the cap in 2014.

They have two choices. Start releasing players or restructure the hell out of a bunch of contracts.

And thats just to get us to the cap.

This team is a total mess.

Unless you get a new guy to re-build it, not much reason to believe the new team down the line will ever look much better than this one.

as long as we have this GM blowing it up will do no good. He will fall in love with more shiny toys again

You can do it. You just can't do it with the mindset of competing next year. If you're going to rebuild, do it right. Don't worry about being competitive in 2014. That would only hold you back from building a new team.

Get the salary cap in order. Whatever it takes. I don't care if we're fielding a bunch of street free agents for a couple of years. The goal is to build a new young core that can contend in the future. Get really bad, stockpile high draft picks, flush out the salary cap mess and maybe this Cowboys team can be one emerging with a ton of youth and plenty of money to spend in a few years.

I'd sign off on that right now. It's time.

Agreed. I'd watch that team muster a 3-13 or 4-12 record happily if I could see the commitment to an actual rebuild.

You seem to be in a panic.

Blow the team up?

Easier said than done. "Oh, Jerra, let's blow the team up and start from scratch."

Disregard contracts. Just cut ever body loose and get a new team!
Yeah, that will work! .

There is nothing wrong with this team that a solid defense can't cure. Get the defense healthy and draft mostly for the defense next year and we can do it within 2 years.

"Blow the team up" is something that occurs in the mind of the naive and fair-weathered fan.

There is no way that this thing can be blown up. Romo's contract cannot be moved. The only think Dallas could do is trade Ware and cut Austin. If Dallas wanted to go extreme and cut Free and start Parnell that would be about it. The team has already been blown up. Hatcher, Ratliff, Ware, and Spencer will all be gone next year. The Dline must be rebuilt quickly and Dallas cannot afford FAs due to the cap. I would not sign Joseph or Bennet because Dallas will need the space to sign Dez and Smith. I was debating cutting Witten but can't fathom doing it. He is a leader and deserves to retire a cowboy. I think Escobar would be better in the vertical passing game, but damn it Jason Witten is the man.
