Exactly.
That's why vitually no team goes this route.
Just reminds me of all the zinging we do with the Commanders about them scavenging for instant success.
Only we've taken it up a notch and not only do they have to be vets that have to be paid big bucks but they also have to be BP guys of some sort.
I'd like to see us draft youth at WR, FS, OT and C/G with our draft picks and if we need more on defense, it can come in later rounds or reasonable vet help in FA.
I'd prefer us to also find a vet QB to backup Bledsoe incase of injury, too. And decide once and for all whether it's Romo or Henson that is our next QB or even let them both go and draft a young QB that has none of their bagagge.
That makes total sense to me. We can't just keep standing pat at the QB position with Bledsoe there and nobody of NFL caliber behind him and nobody of NFL caliber on the roster that will eventually compete for a #1 QB job.
While I think it's understood that Parcells is in it for the short-term now, it's irresponsible to ignore the future of the team once he's gone now. As was done to the defense last year in drafting youth in the DL and Lbers for longterm..
..it's now the offenses' turn for a similar youth facelift that would help immediately and down the road.
That's not to say that bringing in an OT and a TE or FB from FA at reasonable numbers wouldn't be fine to help this year and maybe next..
..somebodies to upgrade the guys like Potite and Tucker and Pettiti and move them back to backup or off the roster completely.
But no more Fergusion/Rivera deals with FA's that are on the backside of their careers.
At some point, hopefully starting now, I really expect the coaching to carry this team further than it has. To me, coaching should be worth at least 2-3 games a year in the win column.
So far, BP and his staff haven't made that difference yet.
The ideal situation is not to get caught any deeper in pursuing expensive FA's. But to get reasonable players to fill needs, draft youth for impact and the future and coach like heck to get more out of them than expected.
Frankly, none of us can honestly say BP has excelled yet at the coaching part...and especially at the playcalling part, which again, he's doing himself.
So I say we need to expect less out of FA to cure our problems and look more closely at what we are paying BP $5 million a year for.
Superior coaching and results on the field.
After 3 years now, BP has had a solid chance at producing like he suggested he was going to. This year, I expect more from him and the team.
And more from guys we are going to basing our future on after BP is gone in 2 years. That's why I want more youth and less high priced vets.
Part of coaching in the NFL is to build a team for the future..not to be a used player advocate and whistle-stop for past Jet/NE/Jints players and coaches.
And I don't want us to become guilty of exactly what we accuse the Commanders of doing. Trying to buy championships and instead blowing to pieces our futures.
