The Cowboys drafted two cornerbacks Friday in Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis. They lost veterans Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne in free agency. The Cowboys signed cornerback Nolan Carroll II and safety Robert Blanton in free agency.

Let's just throw onto the departure group pile...Barry Church and JJ Wilson.

That puts the departure group at Carr, Claiborne, Church, and Wilson. Not only are they gone now, and a higher cap cost, but next season they will leave behind extra draft picks that will prove very beneficial at getting targeted players.

The secondary just was added:

CB Nolan Carroll II
S Robert Blanton
CB Chidobe Awuzie
CB Jourdan Lewis
S Xavier Woods
CB Marquez White

I tell you, that groups smells like press coverage and an increase in projected turn overs for Dallas.

Now, add them into who was already on the roster, and things look mighty engaging:

CB Orlando Scandrick
CB Anthony Brown
S Byron Jones
S Jeff Heath
S Kavon Frazier

This well could prove out to be the very best defensive secondary that this fan has seen in the past 20 seasons...in Dallas.

The biggest difference to me is speed. Awuzie, Jones, Heath, Scandrick, and Brown all have a ton of it. Huge difference between Carr, Mo, and Church.

When Lewis, one of the best pure cover corners in the draft, is your slowest guy, you're doing something right.

That's not even getting into actually, you know, playing the ball which is night and day.

Add in a healthy Jaylon, and Sean Lee, and your back 7 is looking pretty good.

I like your post but make a minor correction: It's JJ Wilcox, not Wilson.

Thanks for pointing out my error...I didn't catch it.

I no longer have the edit ability...time ran out.

But since he's gone, he's old what's-his-name.
 We've all done it at one time or another.

Best part of everything is we changed the entire mood and mindset of our defense.

Gone are the guys that are used to coming up short and are just going to go home to their mansions at the end of the day. Enter a group of hungry, young, athletic phenoms that are ready to make their marks in the league and get their mansions.

It's going to be special watching these secondary players grow together, compete and make each other better.

I'll save that very snapshot...:hammer:

I just hope all these DBs we drafted are better than the Dwayne Goodrich, Kareem Larrimore, and Mario Edwards draft where we also took a ton of DBs. At least people are talking about how decent these guys are. I remember in that draft, people were mostly talking about how we reached.

Given the quality of the receivers Dallas will be facing in the NFC East (and now playing against a first-place schedule), it remains to be seen how well the young secondary will fare. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is an accomplished teacher, however, and for the first time in years Dallas has the raw talent on defense to match that on the other side of the ball.

I am thrilled with the talent and versatility we have in our secondary. Lots of flexibility and depth as guys can play multiple positions.

Best of all-- they added guys who are known for their toughness, grit, and leadership.

I'm sure you guys all noticed the theme of the DB guys drafted. When describing them, they used terms like "sticky hands" and "thinks the ball is his birthright". I love the atmosphere Marinelli is creating here. He drafted a bunch of ball hawks. Rod knows TO's win games. Kudos to him. No offense to Wilcox, but I'll take INT highlights over hit highlights any time.....

I think the influx of new talent on the back end is two fold. If, as has been stated all these guys come in with a much better attitude to the ball, as in - it's my god given birthright to that ball, and I'm taking it ! And the willingness to tackle !
That like it did on offense last year, breathes a whole new life into everyone in that room, from coaches to vets to all the new players.
During the draft, I was a little worried that all the guys we were picking were kinda undersized, esp. with what has happened even within our own division. i.e. the influx of big receivers. But I was happy to see that only really Lewis is undersized, and if not this year, by next he should have Scandrick's slot job. Woods is a smaller safety, tough, scrappy son of a gun and very smart. But with the vets on the team I think this first year he will play a lot of ST's units. I am really invested in Frasier this year.
And, an added bonus is White the CB taken in the 7th. May-be hoping here, but he was a good player that kinda fell off his last couple of years. If all these other CB's bring a new attitude and toughness to that room, maybe that reignites that fire in White. Which would give us another long smooth corner, if he can put it all together. Was worth a late round shot !
I get more excited about what we did in this draft, the further we get away from it, and the more I think about the possibilities.

That's the question. I'm happy we strongly addressed the secondary, and I think bringing in Carroll and Blanton at least gives us players who've shown they can play in the league. It looks like we did well with the ones we drafted this year, but we'll see how it turns out.

with this draft, let it rip. Scare the crap out of the NFL and see what the players are about. Who cares , was a good draft, seems to be good talent, you believe in it, play it. What is a year of sitting going to do? make them better? play them and let the game teach them things you cant.

It's anyone guess exactly what level of play our renewed secondary might generate this year. What looks to be a better talent level holds sound reasoning to hope for improved secondary performance at some point in 2017 and beyond. Our 2017 draft was evidently a successful venture. I'd venture to say our neediest positional holes were resolved handily. Congrats to Will McClay and all of the personnal involved in this draft.
