Rivera’s defenses don’t often blitz. The Commanders had a 21.8 percent blitz rate last season which ranked 27th in the NFL last season. For comparison, the Rams blitzed 28.8 percent of the time in 2023. From a coverage standpoint, Rivera has always relied on zone looks, mostly Cover 3 and quarters. David Howman over at Blogging the Boys explained Rivera’s scheme is Washington. Said Howman,

“This scheme relies, by design, on talented players that play fundamentally sound football. Rivera’s best defenses in Carolina featured studs like Luke Kuechly, Kawann Short, James Bradberry and others. In Washington, much of his success stemmed from a dominant defensive line ...That’s part of the problem: not enough talent. Without a dominant pass rush, young corners like Benjamin St-Juste and rookie Emmanuel Forbes have been picked apart by opposing quarterbacks, while the predictability of the scheme makes it easy to figure out ways to beat the defense.”

Who had the better defenses as a DC though? I really don’t know.
Both of them had several years of top 10 defenses as head coaches their defenses didnt fair that great. Quinn probably had a better 2 year stint with the legion of boom but some say he also inherited a talented high performing unit anyway.

Remember when we moved on from Garrett and Jerry only interviewed two has beens? That wasn't a fluke, that's his hiring philosophy.

Get ready for Rivera. Jerry has already decided.
Not to mention that he wanted Rivera in 2020 until Washington got him.

I see hiring Rivera as perhaps a lateral move, if not one to beat what we had in Quinn. To be continued. This involves a DC job, not HC.

It's hard to get excited about a coordinator who hans't run a defense in nearly 15 years. Im not including the 5 games last year when that entire team checked out after Thanksgiving. Yes im sure he has been involved in assisting with game planning and such since 2010, but still...

Because guys like Staley and Vrabel can boost their resume instead of sitting out a year
Vrabel doesn’t need to boost his resume. He’s still being paid his head coach salary by Tennessee. There will be another 6 to 8 head coach openings after next season. To think some teams have not already reached out to his agent to gauge his interest and compensation he’ll be seeking is naive. No way he tarnishes his reputation by taking a DC position with any team.

Ron's got the job, he just needs to put on weight. I know Fat Mike can help.
