To Everyone In Irene's Path

There must be an interesting story behind "kill Devil Hills".

From Wiki:

The name Kill Devil Hills dates back to the Colonial era. Shipwrecks were common at the time, and many of the ships were transporting barrels of rum. When a ship foundered, local wreckers would scavenge what they could of the ship's cargo before it sank, hiding their pilfered rum behind, and sometimes in, the same large sand dunes where the Wright Brothers would later perform glider tests, before flying their first plane from level ground nearby. Since "rum" was called "Kill Devil" by the English at the time the dunes became known as "Kill Devil Hills."

....didnt' know that.

It passed by Savannah without much impact. Yesterday there were some interesting swirling clouds and later there was some rain (but not an abnormal amount). The waves out on Tybee Island were bigger/stronger than normal, but nothing dramatic. And it feels like a regular day today in the Historic District. For whatever reason, the Georgia coast rarely gets hit by hurricanes (knock on wood).

My thoughts are with those less fortunate who are/will be impacted.

Just got an automated call from Pepco, warning about potential power outages. Wind and rain starting to pick up here in DC. If something happens to me, I'll need one of you to criticize Jerry in my stead.

Lot's of great history out there.
They found the anchor to Blackbeard's ship (the Queen Anne's Revenge) this past spring.
There have been more ship wrecks off of the NC coast than any place in the world, 2nd only to off of Japan (for obvious reasons).

We're ok here south of Richmond. There has been lots of rain and some gusty wind. I've seen 2 good sized limbs drop off trees in the back yard.

They said the worst for us would be in the later afternoon, so I'm guessing between now and 5. I can hear the wind picking up outside as I type this.

We've had the power flick off and on twice, and a few brown outs, but so far so good. I have 2 friends in different areas of Richmond that were without power. One is back on after a few hours and the other appears to be still out.

Virginia boy killed by tree felled by Hurricane Irene
By The Associated Press

A Virginia boy has died after a tree felled by winds from Hurricane Irene crashed into his apartment in Newport News.

City spokeswoman Cleder Jones says the 11-year-old boy and his mother were in the apartment when a large tree fell shortly after noon Saturday. Winds from the storm were around 60 mph at the time.

Jones says the boy’s mother was able to make it out of the apartment uninjured.

The boy, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones said several apartments in the Brookridge Apartments complex were damaged.

Norfolk is gonna get slammed here shortly.

It's on.

Hasn't dampened the spirits in VB though....anyone catch Jim Cantore's reaction to the drunk guy flashing him on live tv? Pretty funny....that Jim is quite a drama queen.

Still have power and internet. Our internet went down for an hour or two and now it's back up and we've had some power flickering.

I'm on Prudence Island in Narraganset Bay...Hope I don't get hit by a tidal wave Sunday. :(

What did he do?

And yes, he is quite the DQ. Really, as big a weather fan as I am, that whole network really overdramatizes almost every event.

It was pretty funny...I guess he had caught wind that some drunk VB kids had been dancing in the rain behind him sans their shorts during his "epic storm dialogue"....he got pretty distraught, apologized numerous times, and said over and over how sad the situation was that people weren't taking it as seriously as he thought they should be. He then said that it was a "very depressing scene".

I, for one, thought it was funny as hell. I think he was just bummed that he got "sacked" on live national television. :D

No power, no mobile service at my house. I'm at one of our co-locations (where our servers are) We have generators for power here. Trees are down everywhere. I felt like a mouse looking for cheese trying to get here. Every road I turned down was blocked by a tree laying across it. :laugh2:

At least our water is on, but our furnace requires electricity to function, so no hot water once what we have is gone.

My part of Monmouth County, NJ seems to have been pretty much left out of the loop. Lot's of rain over night and wind, but no loss of power or any kind of damage. If not for the news, I'd have taken this is nothing more than an average late August rain storm.

Haven't gone out for a ride yet, so I can't say what's going on in the broader area, but I know the shore region and some friends up North took a beating with floods and downed trees. Good luck New England. :)

Lost power at 2:15AM. Finally kicked in at 10:35PM. A man can get a lot of thinking done in the dark.

I think by "thinking" he meant "playing with himself".
