Hall of Fame wideout Terrell Owens can't believe former NFL safety Darren Woodson hasn't yet been enshrined in Canton.

"I'm thinking about a guy like Darren Woodson that's not in the Hall of Fame, but John Lynch is," Owens said to Hall of Fame receiver Andre Reed on Fubo Sports' Getcha Popcorn Ready (h/t Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk). "How in the hell do you quantify that?"

“When I got with the Niners, like I said, I didn’t know anything about no rivalry with the Cowboys and the Niners, I knew nothing about that,” Owens told Reed. “But when it comes to the game plan [it was about where is Woodson]? Granted John Lynch did some great things here and there, but I’m not looking for John [on the field]. I wasn’t. But when I played from my rookie year on, and I played against the Cowboys, I had to identify [where Woodson was]. Just because a guy starts on a defense and he is the No. 1 guy back there in the secondary for that defense, for me overall in totality, that doesn’t mean he’s impacting what I’m going to be doing. Yeah, he has to be accounted for that day because you’re game planning, but I wasn’t scared of No. 47 (Lynch]. And when I was with the Eagles and he was with Denver at the time [shrugs].”

Looks like their stats are about even, with the exception of tackles, which favors Woody, with John playing one more year, I think.

John became the 49ers Executive in 2017 and won the Executive of the Year in 2019. He was inducted in the HOF in 2021. That's the only thing I can think of as to why he got in ahead of Woody. Woody is a good guy so it can't because he's a bad guy.

Easy, Lynch was a star on his team to the public. He and Sapp and Brooks and maybe Barber were the names on the team.

Dallas had the triplets and Haley and Sanders. Woodson wasn't a star to the public. He was to me, loved to watch him play and he got bad calls when he'd hit with his shoulder first but with such force it would look like a head shot. Great player and deserves to be in the HOF.

I met him and his daughter at a Tom Thumb in Plano one day and I told him he belonged in the HOF. Very nice gentleman but it was a shock seeing him up close because like Moose, he'd lost all that playing weight and didn't look like what I would expect.

Good points.

Safety and interior line are the 2 hardest of the main positions to make Canton. You either need insane accolades or some help by being in the public eye.

Lynch was a star to the public, made in impact on 2 different franchise (he's one of the few players that's in the ring of honor for multiple teams) and he continued to be in spotlight post career by being a broadcaster and more recently a GM.

Lynch had more sacks, INT’s and forced fumbles than Woodson. Plus he played for one of the top 10 great greatest defenses in NFL history the 2002 Bucs.

Since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule, only eight safeties have been inducted into the Pro Football HoF that played exclusively since that change. Who are they? (A few of them played CB as well).

Ed Reed
Brian Dawkins
Ronnie Lott
Troy Polamalu
Kenny Easely
Rod Woodson
Aeneas Williams
John Lynch

Lynch and Darren Woodson are very close stat-wise when adjusting for games played.

Kenny Easely only played seven seasons, All-Pro 1st team 3 times (4 overall), Pro Bowl 6 times, and a DPoY once.
Ed Reed played 12 seasons,1st team All-Pro 1st team 3 times (7 overall), Pro Bowl 10 times, and a DPoY once
Brian Dawkins played 16 seasons, All-Pro 1st team 4 times (5 overall), Pro Bowl 9 times
Ronnie Lott played 14 seasons, All-Pro 1st team 6 times (8 overall), Pro Bowl 10 times
Troy Polamalu played 12 seasons, All-Pro 1st team 4 times (6 overall), Pro Bowl 8 times
Rod Woodson played 17 seasons, All-Pro 1st team 6 times (8 overall), Pro Bowl 11 times
Aeneas Williams played 14 seasons, All-Pro 1st team 3 times (6 overall), Pro Bowl 9 times

Woodson and Dawkins probably make another AP/PB team if they didn't lose most of a season due to injury in their prime

Now...
John Lynch played 15 seasons, All-Pro 1st team 2 times (4 overall), Pro Bowl 9 times
Darren Woodson played 12 seasons, All-Pro 1st team 3 times, Pro Bowl 5 times

If John Lynch is in the Hall, Darren should be too.

Interesting piece of data: Since the NFL began tracking solo tackles as a stat, only Darren Woodson and Brian Dawkins averaged four solo tackles a game for their career. Not Reed, not Polamalu. Ronnie Lott probably did but that stat wasn't tracked.

Lynch only has 3 more INTS than woodson.....and only 4 more forced fumbles than Woody.

Look at the career comparisons in numbers and stats and see how similar the two safeties are.

And keep in mind that lynch had to be schemed and protected in cover 2 zone and space, whereas woodson was so fast, agile and athletic enough that he could cover slot WRs.

i suggest lynch has been so hyped in the Tampa 2 defense that he's been "sensationalized " as a HOFer over the snubbed Woodson...imo.

Woodson had 4 all pro 1st team selections according to wiki. 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998

According to Pro Football Reference, he has three. As a teacher/professor, I never allowed a Wiki source.
Pro Football Reference automatically defers to Associate Press all-pros only when you look at a player's profile but if you search PFR for the 1998 all pro team Woodson has a 1st team selection for The Sporting News (Canton recognized AP, PFWA, and SN selections)

It's confusing that Canton recognizes all 3 because someone like Aaron Donald who had a down year last year technically got selected to the SN all pro team last year so he technically in Cantons eyes continued his all pro streak even though it wasn't the AP

The stats are close. I think the fact that Lynch played for such a great defense in 2002 gave him an edge.

I was just about to post this. I use the AP default, as going through every player for all three award trees is too much. AP was the standard.

It's normally not a huge deal because TSN and PFWA only do first team only so it's rare for someone to make those 2 but at the same time make neither 1st or 2nd team AP
