Any amateur coach would have done the same. Put 8 men in the box, stuff the run. We don't have the WR's to beat anyone deep. There's no respect on the D. Get used to it.
Then again, our D gave up 39 points. Not sure Romo could have rescued today's game.
It's not as simple as throwing deep. This idea that 8 in the box means throwing deep is just not an accurate understanding of how this game really works...
Going deep requires your QB to have enough time to allow your WR's get down field..it also requires time for the QB to determine which side the safety help is rolling to..you don't always have this amount of time when a team is rushing with 8 in the box...also this scenario at best results in some deep low percentage routes. This isn't a great strategy for success or longevity in the NFL.
What a stacked box does allow is intermediate mismatches and quicker hot reads. A good QB will understand that there is a mismatch on the field and be able to find it consistently enough to beat it...it's actually pretty rare for a team to stack the box and stay that way.
Point being that any WR at this level can get open on the intermediate routes that a stacked box brings. Assuming you have a QB with the ability to read the defense and get the ball there before the pressure gets to him or the hole in the secondary closes. Weeden lacked confidence. We can't know if the coaches told him to not throw these routes or if it was his decision and he decided to not risk it. Only Weeden and the coaches could know this.
Like others have said...expect this to continue and intensify in the coming weeks. Billichek is known as a coach that makes you beat him with your weaknesses. Spagnola will do this. Rob Ryan will do this.
The coaches need to decide if they are going to count on Weeden to figure out how to make these reads or get him out of there and simplify the offense with Cassell.
Lord help us.
