Seems Mr Petty was suing someone new every other week. I have no doubt that litigious nature will carry on with his estate. RIP

Tom Petty, the rocker best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is dead at 66, CBS News has confirmed.

The legendary musician suffered a full cardiac arrest and was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home Sunday night. He was taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and put on life support, reports TMZ.

Petty rose to fame in the 1970s with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The group put out several hits, including "American Girl," "Free Fallin'," "Breakdown," "Listen to Her Heart" and more. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Though Petty and his band debuted their first self-titled record in 1976, they continued to perform over the past four decades. Petty played his last show last Monday, performing three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl to conclude their 40th anniversary tour. The band wrote on their website that the tour included 53 shows in 24 states.

In December, Petty told Rolling Stone that he thought this would be the group's last tour together. He said, "It's very likely we'll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don't think so. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking this might be the last big one. We're all on the backside of our sixties. I have a granddaughter now I'd like to see as much as I can. I don't want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that's a lot of time."

This one is crushing for me. He was "my guy" when it came to music. Not only his own, but with his Buried Treasure show and eventual channels on Sirius/XM radio, he introduced me and taught me so much about music.

It feels like I lost a close friend.

Have you ever heard of a chicken running around with his head off. It's a freaky thing to see.

Some dead people are also known to have muscle twitches. Rogue pre-programmed electrical impulse in the body. Those movements aren't controlled by the brain, they are part of a neural network within the spinal cord.

I believe that stopped years ago and it was mostly the record labels I believe.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The guy was an incredible musician and he was always someone that stood out to me from most other artists.

It hit me pretty hard when I heard. :(

The guy was a "Musical Mentor" to me. Taught me so much and introduced me to Motown, R&B, Blues, and all kinds of music. I've had his Buried Treasure show on in my home and backyard for years. His love and appreciation for music was clear and undeniable. And for as famous as he was, he was always just "Tom".

Feels like a death in the family.

My grandpa showed me how to ring a chicken's neck and then let it go to walk around a while.
My Grandma showed me,I was about 7 or 8 and she had me go in the coop a catch the oldest rooster for Sundays chicken and dumplings ( it was one of those grey, black and white almost in a digitized color scheme) anyway she started slinging that rooster around like you'd have to crank start a mod.T ford ,,and on the 3rd revolution it's head and half it's neck separated and it's body went flying and flopped on the ground then it got up and ran straight into my legs from about 15 foot away, it bled all over my new white sneakers ( I remember that) after it bounced off my legs it got back up and ran in circles for a bit then flopped over and grandma bent over and picked it upo_O

( I'd kinda like to think Tom Petty would approve of this off topic thread drift on many different levels)

He never sued him:

"About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam," Petty wrote. "All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam's people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement.

"The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it," Petty continued. "How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all."

Still processing the news. Right now I’m spinning his “Wildflowers” LP on my turntable, in his honor. RIP, TP! :(

Nice. I have an original wildflowers I bought for ten bucks brand new in 98. On top of everything else to love about him I love that he loved music and was an audiophile. The quality of the mastering and pressing mattered to him. All the petty records sound amazing.

Drives me crazy that Springsteen’s albums have been ruined by the mastering in the modern era.

I wish pulled the trigger on the live anthology vinyl, I held off and now they are long out of print and worth a fortune. The four disc set is my favorite tithing Petty put out. It’s incredible and it sounds incredible also.

We are running out of rock n roll heroes and I hate it.

I agree.

Not only was the man a legend himself, but he gave more respect to other performers than he ever asked for himself.

And he's pushed and promoted the quality work of other performers forever.

Without his Buried Treasure show, I would have never had the chance to be exposed to so much of the great music I love today. Blues legends like Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, Howlin Wolf. Rock legends like Chuck Berry, and classic stuff from the Stones. And so many obscure tracks I would have never heard anywhere else.

I owe my knowledge of, appreciation for, and love for music to that man.

The guy was the real deal. Bad arse too.

Years ago, Stevie Nicks was writing songs for her "Trouble in Shangrila" album... she had writers block... ask Tom to write sings for her. He said, no wrote the dam songs yourself lol

That made it into one of the sings she wrote.

Song name: That Made Me Stronger

The lyrics were:
"Well, the conversation rings in my head
Well, you know me better than I know myself
Will you write this for me?
He says, "No, you write your songs yourself"

That made me stronger, it made me hold on to me

Cool story.

Nice.

I know at one time, Stevie wanted to leave Fleetwood Mac and join the Heartbreakers. Petty said "there's no girls in the Heartbreakers" and that was that. They remained close however and performed together several times.

You sure he's alive? I think I've seen him on Walking Dead a few times. Zombie Rock...
I don't how he has survived. He has looked dead for the last 40 years. I think The Rolling Stones must have transfusions of Virgin's Blood or something.
