Tony on a few big topics from his recent appearance on the Ben & Skin show. Great perspective.

Why do you think Dez Bryant is not on a team right now?

Tony Hill: "Well, without question, Dez Bryant is a talent. I mean, this guy -- he's a real competitor. But I think the bottom line is -- his problem right now is the mentality that comes with being associated with Dez Bryant. He gets upset and frustrated on the sideline, he comes and has tantrums on the sideline. It's infectious, it hurts the ball club and I think that's where the Cowboys were. ... They've got a lot of young guys coming up and they had to determine what's more important? Bringing up a team of youngsters and teaching them the right thing? Or having a leader who doesn't lead by example? As a result, I think teams are shying away for that simple reason."

Should Cowboy fans be concerned that the receivers were getting dominated by the DBs during OTAs?

Tony Hill: "Not in this particular case. You've got a lot of guys on the defensive end and in the secondary who've had extensive playing time. They've been together, they understand the philosophy that they've got to perform under. There's a bunch of new receivers coming in trying to understand the system and more importantly they're just working on timing. It's one thing to go out there and try to beat a guy and it's another thing to beat a guy with timing. They want to understand what's going on and I'm sure the coaching staff is fine with that. ... I think they're going to be OK. They've got a couple wide receivers who have good speed and good moves and Dak Prescott is looking for his go-to group as opposed to a go-to guy. That's what's most important right now."

Did Dak Prescott's regression in Year 2 surprise you?

Tony Hill: "When you look at Dak and how he's performed -- he's a guy who was really efficient his first year. Last year he was asked to do a bit more. With an injured O-line and without your star running back and without your wide receiver who was injured all year long -- Cole Beasley didn't have his best year this particular year -- he didn't have all the tools to be successful. He had all the tools to manage the team but not all the tools to be successful. ... I think having Ezekiel Elliott in the backfield is a big difference no if's, and's or but's about it. I think you'll see an improved Dak this year coming up."

Hill provides an expected and knowledgeable observation from someone who excelled and succeeded at the position. It is an observation anyone should make of someone like Dez Bryant, as opposed to someone like Michael Irvin.

To some, both men may seem exactly the same emotionally and others may see their inspirational influences as being exactly the same. Both are more dissimilar than similar in these aspects though. It is the reason why Irvin achieved greatness playing in the NFL and why Bryant appears currently stuck at a personal crossroads in his career.

I haven’t heard that the WR’s were getting dominated by the DBs in OTA’s.

If true it is a concern since we have a coaching staff that doesn’t scheme guys open and a group of 2nd and 3rd level receivers.

Actually, I think it's exactly what Tony Hill said (and it gives me even greater confidence that our defense and WRs will be much improved this year). The pessimistic take isn't always in the ball park.

One of my all time favorite Cowboys. When he ran it looked like he was gliding.

Never gets the credit he deserves despite having almost identical career stats to Drew Pearson. He was for Drew what the 49ers John Taylor was for Jerry Rice... an awesome wing man who was a good receiver in his own right.

Nice to hear him still talking Cowboys stuff. Good insights.

It just blows me away that they signed Dez to that ridicules contract. I'm so glad Jerry is fading into the abyss. You pay a guy who you know cannot physically preform at that level for years. Leaping into the air that high was going to result in bad things happening.
Then there's Romo's contract, knowing he had a bad disc.
Hello Stephen and company. Thank you for saving us.

Did Cole Bease have a down year cause of his play or due to his limits and defenses adjusting to the routes he runs?

Every receiver has limits. Michael Irvin wasn't a speedster, nor was Drew Pearson. Dez couldn't run great routes. Others had speed, couldn't catch a cold. Sure Beasley has limits, size mainly, not great speed but he does have great quickness, which is just as useful.

But great receivers have coaches that design and use plays that use the receiver's skills. If defenses adjust to the routes and lessen one receiver's impact, you go to another receiver, and defenses will have to drop off a Beasley to cover that other receiver, at which point you can go back to Beasley.

The coaches didn't do their jobs...

Tony Hill's stride always made me wonder if he and James Lofton were related....................

Every Cowboys fan should find the video of Tony Hill’s TD at the end of the first qtr in SB XIII. An absolute thing of beauty. Watch the unusual block by Drew Pearson too.

Tony Hill is extremely underrated. He would have been the #1 receiver on almost any team in the NFL. He just happened to play alongside a receiver in Drew P who was an All Pro, made the “All 70s Team of the Decade” and criminally is not in the NFL HOF.

Hill was a Stanford grad, and was always one of the smartest Cowboys to ever wear the star. Nice, insightful interview.
