Explain to me again how it was only injuries (since he missed only 4 games in four years) that were the reason he wasnt productive?

Where in those stats does it show that he was even remotely a very effective TE when he was in there? He had one barely passable year, and not passable by a legit TE standards, and yet it was the injuries that got him?

Yeah, his back forced him to retire early. But it wasn't a back that kept him off the field a bunch, or some none sense like I've seen here.

Point blank. The stats tell the story. He was NOT good.

TDs - 12 (7 in his only semi decent year, meaning only 5 for the remaing 3 years)
Throw out his rookie year and his last.

His numbers don't tell the entire story. Trust me.

yeah, just throw out his rookie year and his last, to make it seem like he was better than he was.

Even in his two years that you want to keep he was not a good TE. A good blocking TE, probably, like an Anthony Fasano might be, but he wasn't a very good over all TE.

Not to mention if we just 'throw out' the seasons that don't work for a players reputation there would be TONS of players that shouldn't be thought of as busts.

he wasn't ever going to be a real threat for Dallas.

I guess you don't remember Eric Bjornson's 442 yards in 1997? Eric still got 218 in 1998. Then in 1999, it was David's job, and he had nice year for a AVERAGE TEAM!!!!! Our leading Recievers in 1999 were Ismail, Ernie Mills and LaFleur. Real great time in Cowboys history, huh? But then again, you were in HS and probably spending most of your time in the bathroom.

After that he couldn't recover from the back.

Throw out his rookie season b/c very few rookies actually contribute.

Throw out his last season b/c he was listed as either questionable or doubtful that entire year.

You can call him a bust all you want (and many will agree w/ you), but I have a hard time calling someone a bust due to injuries . JMO.

How about Brian Bosworth! What a joke. The guy had a better movie career than football career. And his movie career sucked pretty bad.

I think the Boz had an insurance policy on his shoulder(it was bad coming out of OU if i remember) that he ended up collecting on when he called it quits. That is my recollection anyway.

What about Clay Shriver?
Tody Smith?
We bombed on a LOT of picks over the years even when Landry and company were way ahead of the league in scouting and using computers; and Jimmy blew quite a few picks as well.

So what did I see in Tony Mandarich?

I evisioned another Anthony Munoz at that time.

Also, I played offensive line in high school. There was some bias there as well. Looking back on past championships, I noticed that nobody won a Super Bowl with a weak offensive line.

IMO, that still holds true today.

I wanted the offensive line intact before going after the quarterback. Growing up in New Hampshire in the 1970s, I saw Jim Plunkett get killed with the Patriots then. The real Jim Plunkett came to life once he got his knees healed and had the likes of Gene Upshaw, Art Shell, and Dave Dalby blocking for him.

Plunkett was already damaged goods once John "HOG" Hannah and Leon Gray arrived on the scene. Then Chuck Fairbanks traded him to the 49ers.

The all time worst first rd top 10 pick is arguable since there are so many possibilities. Mandarich did play some years, so he actually is not even close. How long did ryan leaf last? Kijanna Carter? etc.

I still have that SI. The groceries that dude went through, wow! Alas, he had Danny Noonan syndrome.

This just shows the draft is a crap shoot.

Hey!

You lay off Tony Mandarich!!!

This is the guy I would have taken over Troy Aikman back in the 1989 draft!

Aren't you glad I am not the GM?

Sometimes it is just best to man up and admit mistakes. For me, this is one of those times.

Yeah, I remember Drew Pearson going on Roy Firestone (ESPN), after the draft, and saying we should have picked Tony Mandarich instead of Troy. He said he would trade anyone on the cowboys roster, except Herschel Walker, for Tony. WOW! Hindsight is a _itch!

Not to mention Danny Noonan (DT Nebraska). He was the 11th pick in the '85 draft.
