Romo pretty much has to be our starter in 2016. There just aren't any NFL-ready prospects in this coming draft. So, the ideal scenario would be to draft a guy and have him sit behind Romo and hope Romo stays healthy for the next couple years. The rookie would get all those Wednesday practices with the first team, so he'd at least have that going for him.

We need to go heavy at RB position and become a run first , run identity , team, otherwise Romo maybe has two months left, not two years.

thats my move. Go heavy at RB and that Running game; of course that was my move last off season too. We need to be a running team. We need to lead the league in rushing attempts.

Romo will not hold up , if he is in the pocket too much. and then when he breaks down......its all over;

In all seriousness if Griffin hits the market to me he's worth a look.

Can't read a defense to save his life, I'm all for taking a look but I doubt he'll ever be a quality starter in this league again

If we released Romo after this season, the dead money is $31 million against 2016 cap.

Even if we made him a June 1st cut, he would then count $15.5 million against the 2016 cap and $15.5 million against he 2017 cap.

This is what happens when you restructure your QBs contract multiple times, you cant just pull the rip cord and start over. How the hell are you going to account for over $30 million in dead money?

Tony isn't going to see out this contract, so a cap hit will happen sometime.

If Tony plays in 2016 it costs $20.8m. Paying this money cant be justified.

If he doesn't it costs $15.5m in dead money. Cutting him saves $5.3m.

Some interesting timing issues that make a June 1st cut viable:

1. If we draft a rookie QB, the rookie cap means the salary hit can be accommodated in the 5.3m saving.

2. The NFL is looking to sell TV rights for more Thursday games. This will lead to a jump in the salary cap in 2017 - so the 2017 dead money can be absorbed.

We won't draft QB even if we are #1 to pick and their is a great QB. Jerry is in LOVE with Romo and is oblivious to his age, injuries, and lack of success in win and in/playoff games. Romo's best chance at a super bowl was last year. That dude is mentally and physically done. Some of you just can't see the light because you are emotionally attached to him like Jerry.

I agree. I know many have already come to the conclusion that we are going anywhere with Jerry at the helm. IF we don't take a QB with the first pick I am confident they are correct....

Interesting post but Romo will never be cut because Jerry loves him too much and thinks he is better than he is.

I know we need a RB amongst other things but I really think we need to look at QB first. Romo has 1/2 year left on IR if we can help it. His age and his injury history is too much to expect him to keep going even for another year.

Our needs in draft are QB, RB, CB, LB, DL

The plan was always for Tony to play at least thru 2017. After that he only has 8.9m in dead money.

If he has to be cut after 2016 the 19m in dead money is manageable since his cap hit was going to be 24m anyways. If they June 1st cut him it is even better.

The only nightmare scenario is if he retires this Spring. Then we have a 12m hit this year and a 19m hit next year. But they could theorectically go after 15m of his 25m signing bonus.
