Gimme a break.
I'm pretty much joking with my 2Pac posts.
I don't care what people like. It's their opinion.

I'm just trying to put my finger on what it is. If it's not a Texas thing than it must be an age thing or something. Reason being, I grew up following Hip Hop, the majority of my friend's did as well and so did their friends. Hip Hop has always been a BIG thing here in my area. And 2Pac has never really gotten much play around here. From my own observations, he was the guy that people listened to that weren't really big fans of Hip Hop. Kinda like saying, "Winger, now that's Rock and Roll!"

I'm just amazed that no matter what, EVERY ONE OF MY POSTS was followed by somebody mentioning 2Pac. I never saw anyone mention any other mainstream artists. Just 2Pac over and over again. Just trying to figure out what it was. I'm not hating on the guy or anyone who likes his music.
Part of my comment was just the fact that you were aggressive and condescening in your challenges as to why a person might like Pac. You may not see it, but you seem to have an elitist attitude to hip-hop. You're not the only who grew up listening to it. You know that, but you seem to think that your opinion on it should be more valid than others. That's how you come across, regardless of whether it's true.

Some people just liked Pac. While he may not have gotten alot of pub in your area, he sure did in others. Shoot I didn't even listen to Pac before my roommate from Phoenix played it for me. And she had his tapes.

That's why I say it's not just a Texas thing. I think it's primarily because of the type of music he produced. Even tho he was from the East, very little of his music sounded like it, or at least what I considered east coast hip-hop. Alot of his more popular hits had the R&B hook feel to it, which appeals to the masses in other regions of the country. If you had to pinpoint something, that would be it.

Much like the majority of the members here feel about their football opinions.

But that's just the point of a forum. For discussion and debate. Of course I'm going to be convinced that my opinion is the right one. That's why it's my opinion.

Nobody's debating the point of the forum. We're having a discussion now. I was just making an observation.

Maybe his talent is actually appreciated and enjoyed by others, hence them saying so? It's really not so hard to understand things.

In no particular order:

Kris Kristofferson - With song credits that range from "Me and Bobby McGee", "Why Me", "Help Me Make It Through the Night", "The Poet" to "Sunday Morning Coming Down", probably the singer/songwriter that moves me the most.
Mickey Newbury - His songs came to the attention of Wesley Rose of Acuff-Rose Music in Nashville, who summoned him to Nashville in 1964. Mickey quickly became one of the premiere songwriters in Nashville, and in the 1960's had #1 hits in Pop, Country, Rhythm & Blues and Easy Listening charts. Mickey was recognized as one of America's finest songwriter-performers, and his songs have been recorded by hundreds of other artists, including Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Joan Baez, Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings and the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1970 Mickey did a live arrangement of American Trilogy while performing at the Bitter End West, and that song has since become a standard in the repertoire of many performing artists. It was probably the last song Elvis performed in concert, and has been recorded by over 100 different artists.
Townes Van Zandt - To me, there's one definitive title that exemplifies Townes' song writing and perfoming style. The haunting 88 balad, "Marie".
James McMurtry - Although not one of my favorites, James' talent as a singer/songwriter is equal to that of his father, Larry of "Lonesome Dove" fame.
Jackson Browne - Browne's "The Naked Ride Home", is one of those songs I can't help but keep from hitting the repeat button on, at least 3 times whenever it comes up in my CD players rotation.
Jerry Jeff Walker - From "Mr Bojangles", "Sangria Wine", "Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits", to "Little Bird", if someone asks me to describe "Americana music" I direct them to JJ Walker. I defy anyone to listen to "Hill Country Rain", "Keep Texas Beautiful" and "Women in Texas", and not instantly want to charge right out and by themselves a pair of Tony Lama ropers.
Guy Clark -
Rodney Crowell -
Van Morrison -
Michael Martin Murphey -
Carol King -

Yeag, you are so wrong for that... He actually did a show at UH and got beat up for his troubles. Don't know what happened, but he pulled off the stage and that was all she wrote...

From an R&B angle, cuz I'm smoothed out like that sometimes...plus u guys got a good mix of stuff covered, tho I do like Alanis Morrissette

Luther Vandross - my fav song is Amazing
Stevie Wonder - A legend
Isley Brothers
Babyface
Can't think of their names, but the guys who did all the Motown stuff...
Diane Warren - She's the writer for alot of power ballads. Whitney, Mariah, Celine (Titanic theme was written by her if I'm not mistaken)
David Foster - Behind people like Whitney in her younger days.

I'll think of others and add later..

Absolutely.

TVZ gets far too little recognition. I hear his influence in all the modern alt.country stuff I dig.

Here is mines:
1. Bob Marley
2. Andre 3000
3. 2-Pac
4. Biggie Smalls
5. Billy Joel (yep!)
6. Canibus
7. Jay-Z
8. Kanye West
9. Marvin Gaye
10. K-Os (search for him)
Not exactly in this order though, but still is great.

Dan Fogelberg... coincidentally, Hos and I have been having an e-mail conversation about music and Dan the last day or so... his lyrics would stand up just fine as poetry...
