I know it is all a matter of taste.

However when an all time top ten list of rock songs is made and at least one Beatles song does not appear on it....well something is just wrong.

they were pop in my eyes but then again the rock genre has changed GREATLY since their time

Just wondering what you guys think are the greatest rock songs ever, IMO:

1: "Dream On" - Aerosmith
2: "Freebird" - Lynard Skynard
3: "Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zepplin
4: "American Pie" - Don McClane
5: "Life in the Fast Lane" - The Eagles
6: "All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix
7: "Like a Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan
8: "Hotel California" - The Eagles
9: "Johnny B. Goode" - Chuck Berry
10: "Highway to Hell" - AC/DC

American Pie would be on my most hated list, that damn song was on a loop that played at a grocery store I worked at in High School, seemed like it was 15 minutes long and played every 16 minutes.
"Life in the Fast Lane" is a great song as well as "Hotel California" of course.

A very good list, though I don't really consider "American Pie" to be a "rock" song... and I'm a big Don McLean fan...

There ya go, I was trying to figure out which song I'd put on other than "American Pie"... good call... "Crossroads" would have worked, too...

"The Last Resort" by the Eagles is another of my favorites

Furthermore, the top 5 rock bands ever IMO:

1: Led Zepplin
2: The Eagles
3: Aerosmith
4: Pink Floyd
5: Lynard Skynard

I know, the Beatles and the Stones arent there, they just arent my thing though. Van Halen and AC/DC are up there as well

I tell my younger friends that the Eagles are what happens to rock and roll when it grows up... their new songs on Hell Freezes Over and Long Road Out of Eden were both very sophisticated musically...

You do realize that we just ruined someone's day don't you?

Some poor bastidge is going to have Muskrat Love or Mandy or Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band stuck in their head all day.

And if I do, I'll hunt you to the ends of the earth...

Gonna try to put up a list here, but I have to disclose a few things first:

To me, rock is a very specific genre, one that does not include "rock & roll", or "folk", or other genres...

I am more of a folkie than a rock-head... most of my favorite musicians don't make this list... and now, for 15 songs that I've thought of, some of them I was reminded of by reading this thread:

"Stairway to Heaven", Led Zeppelin
"Born To Be Wild", Steppenwolf
"All Along The Watchtower", Jimi Hendrix
"The Wall", Pink Floyd
"Freebird", Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Layla", Eric Clapton
"Jumpin' Jack Flash", Rolling Stones
"Smoke On The Water", Deep Purple
"Life In the Fast Lane", Eagles
"Crossroads", Cream
"Black Magic Woman", Carlos Santana
"Like A Rolling Stone", Bob Dylan
"Hotel California", Eagles
"Born On The Bayou", Creedence Clearwater Revival
"Born In the USA", Bruce Springsteen

I know, no Beatles... it's not that I don't like the Beatles, it's that most of their stuff that I like was more rock & roll than rock... I was also tempted to include something by Bob Seger, but again, to me he's more rock & roll... and yes, I know this list is pretty much mainstream rock, like I said, I don't listen to all that much rock in the first place...

But I'm thinking I could burn a mix of these 15 songs, and have a good time listenting to them going down the road...

My tastes have gotten much more eclectic -- partly due to getting older and partly due to downloading (which has actually increased my purchasing).

right now I'm digging cds by Jens Lekman, Wolf Parade, Flaming Lips (advance copy of their new album), Super Furry Animals, Frog Eyes, Belle and Sebastian, several Brazillian Tropicalia CDs, Devendra Banhardt, and lots of Wilco since I recently saw Jeff Tweedy perform.

How 'bout you?

If you like Wilco - check out Son Volt.

It is troubling to me that no one has mentioned "Won't Get Fooled Again" thus far in thread................ :)

Every time I hear it I envision a David Caruso one-liner followed by him ripping off his sunglasses. Yea, I hate that song now.
