The top 5 IMO are Lombardi, Landry, Walsh, Noll, and Shula

After that, you can start talking about guys like Gibbs, Parcells, etc

great coaches i would put just a smidgen ahead of parcells.

I'll give you Belichick, though it could be argued Parcells made him what he is

But Marty? He has underachieved every place he's been

Reeves? How many times did his teams choke in big games?

Flores career record is just above .500

What has Shanahan done without John Elway?

yeah...look at all that success he had in New England, with the Jets and here in Dallas

he's never once coached a team to back to back conference championship games, let alone back to back super bowls...his two super bowl winning teams didnt even make the playoffs the following year

he's a good coach, but he is being overrated somewhat by alot of people...to date here in Dallas he has been a much better talent evaluator than coach on the field IMO...

David

I can't see anyone taking a shot at Johnson for what happened in Miami and NOT taking a shot at Parcells for what has gone on in Dallas, i.e., one game over .500 after three seasons....one playoff appearance...one playoff drubbing.

Jimmy Johnson has been out of coaching for five years.

I haven't heard any mention of him going to the HOF. Why not?

I agree that what Parcells has done has yet to really payoff, but I still have faith that it will. The only thing you need to know about the 2003 playoff appearance and subsequential drubbing are 4 words: QUincy Carter, Troy Hambrick. The 2 starters at the most important positions on the field that season are now no where close to a job in pro football. It was a miracle that team even made the playoffs. Its nothing like that absolute *** kicking of Miami vs. Jacksonville.

Because typically to be a HOF coach, you have to coach more than 5 seasons

It just kills me, though, that JJ's ego got the better of him. If he hadnt fired Jimmah, we would have won the SB in 1994 (Johnson OWNED Seifert and his 49er teams on epic levels and would have won that 1994 NFC title game). Johnson would have led us to 4 straight SB wins, and I have always wondered if he could have made in 5 in the 1996 season (we were still the most talented team in football).

:(

Yes, what could have been is maddening. I do think that JJ was humbled through the horrible years known as the Dave Campo era.

I wonder if he could do it all over again, if he would have conceded power like he has with Parcells. JJ might still be our coach, and we would have never sniffed rock bottom like we did.

Hmm...What's wrong with this picture?

John Elway was maybe the best QB EVER and won countless games on his own. Tom Brady isnt even in the same stratosphere, the Patriots won those titles with smart offense and great defense

Good list, and looks about right. Bill is in the top 10, but probably toward the bottom.

No votes for Hank Stram? 3 AFl Championships and a Superbowl..

Chuck Knox was pretty good as well.. although a lack of championships hurts his perception

Bill Walsh has to be there somewhere

George Allen is worth a mention

John Madden????? for what? 1 superbowl and a video game for 20 years?

Bill Parcells has accomplished 1 particular thing many many times that John Madden never accomplished, ever....a losing season.

Hey, give me a break, I said it was off the top of my head :)

And it's all somewhat subjective, but I'd prefer every coach on my list over Parcells...that's just a personal thing.

I'd sure as hell prefer Bellichick, even though I didn't think of him.
