What did everyone think of the top 25 players of all time that ESPN/ABC did for college football?
I don't truly know anything about these guys that played long before I was born. Red Grange? I guess. Hard to judge someone from only a highlight reel.
I thought Barry Sanders at #2 was too high. He had a great year in 1988. One of the greatest for a running back, but it was still only one season. He rushed for 947 yards over his freshman and sophomore seasons.
When I think of best college players of all time I think of guys that were great each year they were in college. Not just a guy that had one great season. No matter how great that season was. Sanders is one of the greats, but #2 is just too high.
Herschel Walker was a great college back all three years he played.
I heard Erik Kasilius just talking about this on ESPN radio. He mentioned Tony Dorsett at #7 and just kind of sighed as if he were unimpressed. Dorsett gained over a 1000 yards in each of his 4 years at Pitt. A feat few have done in Division 1A football. He won the Heisman and led his team to the title his senior season and is now 3rd all time in rushing. His accomplishments are far greater and more consistent than Sanders when it comes to college football.
