Kinda bored (dead week). This is my top ten books, the books that have shaped my life. I tried to put them in order, but it is hard. They each affect me differently. Some are novels, some nonfiction, etc. Just good stuff.

1) Stranger in a Strange Land Robert A. Heinlein

2)
1984 George Orwell

3) Job: A Comedy of Justice Robert A. Heinlein

4) The Life and Death of Socrates Plato

5) The Holy Bible Multiple Authors

6) A Brief History of Time Stephen Hawking

7) Meditations Rene Descartes

8) The Chosen Chaim Potak

9) The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich Adolf Hitler

10)
The Communist Manifesto Karl Marx and Frederick Engels

(Note - just because they affect me doesn't mean I subscribe to the beliefs. I learn a lot from reading these, but I am not a **** or Communist.)

1984 > Animal Farm. All day.

BTW - I considered putting Harry Potter on my list, but decided I didn't want to take hell for it.

And I'm not a loser.;)

OK, I'm not in the same league as you all, but here it goes ....

1. The Bible (much more than a book)

2. Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry

3. A Hero For Our Time, a biography on JFK

4. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

5. A Painted House, by John Grisham

6. Where the Buck Stops, writings of Harry S Truman

7. The Time it Never Rained, by Elmer Kelton

8. Just As I Am, autobiography by Billy Graham

9. Rave On, biography on Buddy Holly

10. Once a Cowboy, autobiography by Walt Garrison

.... these are just off the top of my head. I love biographies, especially sports biographies... I have tons of them.

I hope you like it. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it was something that I could identify with. Let me know what you think when you finish it.

I like your list. I've heard great things about the Joel Osteen book and the Rick Warren book.

I will definately let you know about my thoughts on the book

The Rick Warren book is really good and gets alot of press because of the woman hostage, but I really like Joel Osteen's book. Really makes a lot of sense and can be implimented easily into your life

Much as I always felt Hemingway was a putz...two great things about him...The unofficial biography of Cbz, "The Old Man and the Sea"...and his observation that "courage is defined by grace under pressure"...

Has anyone read Steve Martin's stuff?

I very much liked both, Shop Girl and The Pleasure of My Company (even though it had a sappy ending)

You know, I have read quite a few of the so called classics and always come away disappointed. Anyway, on to my list, I mainly read for entertainment purposes though, so don't expect anything too deep.

The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R Tolkien - Really three books. I have probably read the series five times since I first tackled it in grade school.

The Dark Tower Series - Stephen King - Really seven books, my list is done! It took King a period of 20 some years to finish this series. I thought the ending was brilliant.

The Firm - John Grisham - The ultimate page turner. One of the first books that I had a hard time putting down.

Battlefield Earth - L. Ron Hubbard - Scientologists are crazy, but this guy still wrote a pretty good book. Terrible movie.

Rainbow Six - Tom Clancy

Band of Brothers - Stephen Ambrose - Terrific series on HBO as well.

Children of the Night - Dan Simmons - A different take on the vampire novel. I highly recommend Simmons if you haven't read him. He has done quite a bit of science fiction, but also does some other interesting work. The Hyperion series was good and his new series starting with Ilium, a sci fi twist on The Iliad, looks very promising.

The Andromeda Strain - Micheal Crichton - I actually enjoy most of his work, but his latest was a dog.

i'm not a book reader but i read "a painted house" and thought it was great!

the joel osteen book is good too, but i watch him every sunday and most everything in the book i've heard in his sermons. joel is more of a motivational speaker than a preacher. but that is good too. he is a great speaker. his father john was a preacher man times 10.

"the amityville horror" was a great, chilling read. way better than the movie.

Juke, I liked Da Vinci Code as well.
Also The Prophet is on my list too. Great Book !!!

I will add...

The Road Less Traveled - Scott Peck
The Man from Nazareth - Harry Fosdick
Modern Interpretation of the Bible - Harry Fosdick
Anything by Carl Jung - greatly influenced some of my thinking
The Kyballion - Three Initiates
The Face - Koontz - just for fun, i like him because he adds the element of supernatural.

Just about to start a new book:

Chogyan Trungpa - His Life and Vision

LOTR are my favorite all time books. I also like those Stephen King but I think the Stand was his best book.

Watership Down is another great book.

I have yet to read the last few Dark Tower books....I will have to get around to it, but now that it has been so long since I read the others I will have to start from scratch.

On a side note have you noticed the themes that run in many of his books that tie together....like the Talisman, The Black House, It, The dark Tower series and Dream catcher to name a few.....the theme of ...Following the Line.
