Torry Holt May Be Released

Personally, I think the thread title is deceptive.

The article says he made be traded or released.

Given Holt's talents, I don't think there's any way the Rams would release him, no matter how bad things are between he and Linehan.

It's not like Linehan's job is secure. He could very well be fired after this week's [strike]loss[/strike] game.

So if the organization plans to fire Linehan, why would you first allow him to further ruin the team by trading away the team's #1 wideout?

Might it be in the Rams' best interests to pack it in this year and trade off it's marketable commodities for draft picks? Sure. they're not going anywhere this year.

But they should do it because it makes the most sense to turn the franchise around, not because some soon-to-be-ex-coach doesn't like him.

I doubt Linehan would get a ringing endorsement from many of his current players.

As for if I think the Cowboys should trade for him if he were available?

Absolutely.

A player of his talent would help this offense go from great to unstoppable. Adding Holt as #2 would allow Crayton to move to his more effective slot position and give the Cowboys arguably the league's best starting twosome at receiver.

Holt's $5.5 and $6.5 million over the next two seasons are reasonable by league standards and wouldn't threaten TO's position as the team's clear #1 receiver either.

And, given that the team only kept 5 receivers, they wouldn't have to cut any of them to add Holt. They could add him and cut from somewhere else on the roster.

I'd give them a 2nd rounder or the 3rd and 4th rounders the Cowboys acquired in this year's draft - in a heartbeat.

My points:

1. He's old.
2. He's expensive.
3. He would take receptions away from TO, Witten & Crayton-- Great way to make the troops happy there!
4. The offense looks to be working at least "OK" to me.
5. A young receiver would have to be released.
6. Holt does not know the playbook.
7. The salary cap next year is going to be tight due to the ending of the collective bargaining agreement. Why piss away $5 mil on an aging receiver who can come up lame at any moment?

Some folks spend way too much time playing "Madden" and don't look at the real-world consequences of filling your roster with expensive aging vets that not only clog the salary cap but cause the release of younger players.

This team took a big dump in the late 90's and the Campo years because of two reason, piss-poor drafting and the over reliance of aging star players who were no longer as good as they once were but who commanded paychecks far greater than younger replacements.

Acquiring a Terry Holt is not how you build a dynasty.

and good moring to you too:D
all good points. i am just not comfortable w/ what we have if T.O. goes down I would rather have a Roy or Boldin over Holt due to age, but Holt could provide a little padding if it hit the fan. BTW I only play with the updated rosters i don't change unless it is a free agent..:D

You got that right. He's from here and his brother plays for the Panthers as well but he would really look good in a Cowboy uni

No he doesn't. He was released at the last cut-downs.

So do I. He's from there, has already said he wants to play there to end his career, and his brother plays there.

If Dallas comes knockin he will listen thats for sure.

A player like him would love to get back on the big stage regardless of how he feels about Carolina.

He is not a long term solution thats for sure, and his yds per catch the past 4yrs suggest he isnt much of a big play threat. His longest play from scrimmage in 3 of the last 4 seasons (counting this to date) has been under 45 yds.

Wow!

He sounds like the exact guy we need to "stretch the field".

No friggin way.

His brother was cut from Carolina. Again, do the Panthers want him? That is the question. Players don't always dictate where they wind up.

Holt just doesn't look like he has "it" anymore - the speed and burst are gone. I would not give up a first day pick nor would I give him $5.5-6 M/season. I would consider giving a conditional second day pick if he would rewrite his contract with incentives.

The only thing is that now that the season has started his contract is guaranteed so he will not want to re-do his deal.

He is 32 semi expensive and yet we extended an oldr wr than him

He has like 2 years left on his contract which puts him at what 34 which is younger than Owens and Marvin Harrison who are still producing

We will lose 1 of the young wr anyway this summer due to FA and if we package 1 with a draft pick so be it

yeah, but that older WR is still a very dominant player and arguably the best WR in football.

Harrison doesnt scare anybody anymore...

how do you know this? Miles Austin could certainly play his way into a longterm contract (and I believe he is an RFA only anyway)...Hurd might be an UFA, but if he leaves we can manage.

Owens is but Harrison isn't. (He's on my FF team riding the bench if not about to get cut).

Owens is a freak of nature but Holt has really slowed down in recent years. Last time we played them he didn't produce against an arguably bad secondary.

The following morning, the same voice called at about the same time and said Linehan was trying to release or trade wide receiver Torry Holt because the two despise each other.

Why would a head coach who is on the hot seat have the autonomy to release one of the team's best players?

Oh wait, the "voice" said so.

Holt is not getting released. Don't fall into the trap laid by this tripe.

Have you seen the Rams o-line? Bulger hurt last year? He is still a top 10 receiver. I'd give a 5th to the Rams and run with him.

Why on earth would they release Holt, that doesnt make any sense? Im not buying it.

I'm with you. Linehan's on the hot seat, has reportedly lost the team, and may not last the year. Unlikely ownership would allow a lame duck to dump one of their best players. If the Rams decide to immediately go into rebuilding mode, trading him might make sense, but if anybody's going to be "released," it's Linehan.

You forgot to mention he may never have completely recovered from his knee operation a year ago and is not the same player many of us remember from the "greatest show on turf" days.
