Personally, I think the thread title is deceptive.
The article says he made be traded or released.
Given Holt's talents, I don't think there's any way the Rams would release him, no matter how bad things are between he and Linehan.
It's not like Linehan's job is secure. He could very well be fired after this week's [strike]loss[/strike] game.
So if the organization plans to fire Linehan, why would you first allow him to further ruin the team by trading away the team's #1 wideout?
Might it be in the Rams' best interests to pack it in this year and trade off it's marketable commodities for draft picks? Sure. they're not going anywhere this year.
But they should do it because it makes the most sense to turn the franchise around, not because some soon-to-be-ex-coach doesn't like him.
I doubt Linehan would get a ringing endorsement from many of his current players.
As for if I think the Cowboys should trade for him if he were available?
Absolutely.
A player of his talent would help this offense go from great to unstoppable. Adding Holt as #2 would allow Crayton to move to his more effective slot position and give the Cowboys arguably the league's best starting twosome at receiver.
Holt's $5.5 and $6.5 million over the next two seasons are reasonable by league standards and wouldn't threaten TO's position as the team's clear #1 receiver either.
And, given that the team only kept 5 receivers, they wouldn't have to cut any of them to add Holt. They could add him and cut from somewhere else on the roster.
I'd give them a 2nd rounder or the 3rd and 4th rounders the Cowboys acquired in this year's draft - in a heartbeat.
