why do people always feel the need to compare the two? honestly liking soccer makes you gay no more than bashing it makes you look tough. two good sports which are completely different so i don't quite see the need to compare.

i've ended up in the hospital from playing the sport, people have been killed playing it (fortunately very rarely) and for example gordon strachan needed a hip replacement operation in his late forties because of the toll on his body but yes football (soccer) is for people who are scared of playing a "real" sport so they can avoid physical injury

nobody is saying that american football isn't a more physical sport but if its only the physicality you're interested in then why not just watch cage fighting?

US Football is more of a chess game with major hitting involved. Soccer is just running around dodging guys.

i'm not criticising american football, if i didn't like it i wouldn't be on this board. just saying that i don't see the need to compare the two. i'd also say that you're over simplifying both sports there burma. obviously i prefer soccer so i'm going to defend it against views like those expressed by bigstar (particularly before hos edited them) but i don't get why a lot of folk have such strong views on something they patently don't understand.

I would want my kids playing soccer at a young age. I think it is a great beginner sport to give a kid a good base of athletic skills. If you can learn to run and kick a ball in a controlled manner it is an easy next step to incorporate the use of your hands. Developing quick feet playing soccer can be very beneficial for other sports such as football and basketball. Cal Ripken has talked about how playing soccer as a youth really helped him playing short stop.

I would love for my kids to play soccer as adults as well because there is great money in the sport just like there is great money in most of the major sports. It is a nice job if you can get it, but most can't because you have to be one of the best of the best to get into the major leagues of any sport.

I would not want my kids playing soccer over football or football over soccer. That kind of stuff doesn't matter to me. If my kid likes one sport over another then I would support them on whichever one they like. Or if they don't like playing sports.

Given equal opportunity, I'd prefer my offspring to play soccer over football. Brain damage in football is a real thing and I'd prefer them to stay safe over some remote possibility of going pro.

Ndamukong Suh, the stud DT at Nebraska is the perfect example of this.

You aren't going to change the mind of those that think soccer is for girls.

It's just the same old rubbish that we have to put up with from Rugby fans over here calling American Football players gay because they have to wear all that padding.

Just nod, agree, and let them revel in their ignorance.

I do find the argument that soccer players aren't athletes amusing though.
Surely the fact that they play 90 mins for 60-70 games a season might suggest some athletic ability, especially when compared to guys that play around 30 mins 16 times a year ;)

This sport is a joke, So what if most of the countries play it? We may have supersized our players through slavery, but of course we don't talk about that? How else could u justify that "regular Africans" don't have the same physical ability outside of soccer? We have the best athletes in the world for for a reason, and it ain"nt pretty. Why do we have some many ultra big and fast players in the NBA and NFL? It is likely they found a better sport for the purpose? And I have no formal educatiuon but it makes a lot of sense? We don't understand that we have a lot of guys locked up for the same reason? They have more physical prowess but are disregared as criminals w/out having the same education and the same reasoning? This country is so backwards that it does'nt make sense.

What exactly are you trying to say here? Be careful with your response. It's in your best interests.

I think we know what he saying, but the sentence "I have no formal educatiuon but it makes a lot of sense" made me not respond to it.

I do it mostly because soccer fans so rabidly support a sport which some people just don't care about and constantly say that they just don't understand it.

It's just an opinion.

while i can see your point there you could say the same for supporters of any sport, including american football

i have no problem with your opinion on this, you have stated several times you have no interest in soccer and refuse to watch it. personally i feel you're missing out but thats up to you, none of my business. people (like bigstar) inferring i am gay or less of a man because i watch and play soccer is what i was talking about.

also the thing about not understanding, there probably is some truth in. from personal experiance i know that two years ago i didn't really understand american football and therefore didn't like it. i ended up watching a game and once i spent a little time to try and understand the sport i discovered that i actually really enjoyed it. not trying to convince you of the merits of the sport, i couldn't care less if you watch it or not, just trying to give an example that their may be some truth in it when people say that a lot of people don't like soccer (or any sport for that matter) largely because they don't understand it.

So many foreigners look down on us because we do not care about soccer. I piss on them. I got force fed soccer when I was in England for 3 years. Did not like it before or after.

I played soccer as a kid, we watch soccer here at work after trading stops (couple of Brits here).

I don't hate soccer, but sometimes it's rather slow. I liken it to running baseball. I'm a baseball fan, but I can't watch 162 games a year, it's just to many games. As for soccer, I don't sit down and watch it, but I will have it playing in the background as there are times the play can get very exciting.

I assure you, I do understand soccer. I can name every position on the field and tell you when penalty kicks, etc. will happen. I just do not like the sport. Watching people run and flop just doesn't do anything for me. If I wanted to watch a lot of jogging I'd go to the local park and watch women jog. The flopping is really what annoys me. I find that to be the worst thing about it by far. One fake debilitating injury in order to draw a yellow card and then all is better is enough to make me want to hurt those guys for real.

I have no idea what you are talking about with regards to someone calling you gay. You know you can report those posts. We don't want that here.

I made a wisecrack about all soccer players being female and followed it up with a single retort after someone said a certain soccer player could whip any soccer detractor in this thread. I was never aiming my jokes at fans and in truth I have not read most of the thread because it was going to discuss the sport which I simply find repulsive to discuss and read. I replied to you because I came back to see if anyone responded to my retort earlier and I replied to your post because it was right after my comment so I assumed you meant me.

Any truth to the rumor that this soccer woman will be portrayed in an upcoming movie by Charlize Theron?

I'm not a soccer evangelizer, far from it, but if you're just watching people jog around it's likely not a very good soccer match. Speed and sprinting ability is likely the #1 asset for any pospective soccer player.

I'm saying America's "History" is why our athletes are generally superior in American sports and could be in soccer if they chose to. That's history, nothing wrong I said there.
