well, its not just us...but Texans who would have to take a 34M deadcap hit this year if they trade him, then we would need to redo his contract, extend him to reduce the 35M cap hit next year.

I think Smith is done. coming back from this injury will be hard for him and he may retire, so we need a LT and if we think Tunsil is good , he maybe an option
If I'm Smith I'd hang em up. He should be set for life and has gotta be about sick of constant rehab.

Either way, the team can't go counting on him really at all for next year and beyond.

This one's gonna hurt. We gonna feel it for a while.

I’m not an NFL contract and cap expert, but could a sign and trade work? Like shift the unamortized bonus to future year’s guaranteed salary. Of course, that would shift the burden of the 34m cap hit to the Cowboys in the future, which history says they wouldn’t do.

Tunsil would work....but it's not happening with that contract.

We need our cap space for......yeah I'm not sure.
Actually his salary this year is only $1.1 million and next year is $18 million. Could be a one year rental or since he is only 28 extend him for several years next year and lower cap amount next year. Texans would be the one eating all that bonus money.

not sure if that works at this point. Tunsil has to be willing to also do that, and would do it probably for more money.

The cost to the Cowboys is only about 1M for 2022. The Texans would have to eat the remainder of the cost due to how it is structured.

The Cowboys would have the option to keep him in 2023 for 18M.

It would be worth a 3rd.

Or trade a lower pick and add one of the DL or Safeties we are going to cut.

A 3rd would be an awesome deal for us IMO. I know he wasn't great last year but I think that was a Houston thing. I look at it as 2 years at $19M. You start Steele and Tunsil this year and then Steele can be the ST next year until Tyron gets hurt again and then after 2023 you keep one of Tunsil and Smith when both of their contracts are up. I don't think Houston does it for a 3 though after what they gave up to get him. Personally I'd go a 2 in a second.

Fisher would be nice but he's been spoiled by his previous contract, which was in the 9 mil range.

Seems like It wouldn't hurt to get in touch with his agent to find out, though. He'd be a quality get.
I disagree. He took a one year prove it deal at $8M per and didn't prove it. He has to know that's getting cut in half on another one year prove it deal. IMO the upside of Fisher bouncing back a year further from that injury is worth that in a second for this team.
