He's small and has trouble shedding blockers when they get to him on the second level. He's great in space and quite good in coverage.

I think ideally we'd prefer to use him as a nickel linebacker because of that, but he'll probably end up being a starter inside when we are in the 3-4 simply because we don't have anyone else unless Barham is ready from the get-go. Barham is more ideal because he's longer and bigger and shows stack and shed capabilities. However, there are concerns about him in coverage.

Watching the highlight tape is different as we’ve been watching tape of college players for months. This is actually against NFL competition. Kid looks fast and aware which is something we haven’t had for a minute.
 
Every time this thread gets bumped I think they made another trade!

Based on what Nick Harris is reporting , it sounds like he’s more of a two down player here. He will be used primarily to get downfield and stop the run. I don’t think they see him as a nickel backer. If I had to guess, I don’t think he has the length CP wants in coverage. We might see DMo and Barham in nickel at LB. Not sure what other options we have if we don’t use winters.

1. He's in a contract year
2. They drafted Nick Martin in the 3rd round last year
3. Fred Warner is healthy
4. Dre Greenlaw is back in SF after a year in Denver
5. They wanted another pick to trade up.

Not more than 30 minutes after getting pick 152 for Winters the 49ers included it in a trade package to move up higher in the 3rd.

He actually looks like he will play the Nakobie Dean role in this D, with Barham in the Baun role at least initially.

One of Barham’s weaknesses is supposed to be coverage while it is supposedly a strength for Winters, who is supposed to have trouble taking on blockers.

He seems to be in the same vein as our other free agents like Thompson and Durant. Not great but productive. I don’t know if this approach is gonna work but it at least raises the talent level.

From everything I read they traded him now whether than let him walk for a comp pick.

The guy looks good in coverage so frankly worrying about length is dumb
