I know this probably wont be a popular thread, but please try to hear me out. Outside of the very young Secondary, most would agree that the DL is and has been our weakest position group since the days of Ware, Spencer, Ratliff, etc. Although I personally believe Dallas had accumulated a nice group of young players like Collins, Irving, Tapper, and Taco.. There is still concern due to the inexperience, suspensions, and ever growing list of injured players. I also think most fans opinion of our DL would change drastically if our Boy's had a Premier edge rusher coming off the right side. As much as I like Lawrence, he seems more suitable for the LDE position and would benefit if we had a 'DeMarcus Ware' player at the other end position. That said.. I wondered what our DL would look like had we pulled off a trade like the Cardinals did with the Patriots last year.
Last Year, the Cardinals received Chandler Jones via trade with the Patriots. The Pats received a second round pick and Jonathan Cooper. (Yes, Cooper..the guy thats presently on our team). The Pats went on to parlay that second round pick for Joe Tuney & Malcolm Mitchell. So, I suppose both teams benefitted depending on how you look at it. As far as Arizona is concerned, I believe they are perfectly happy how Chandler Jones performed: 49tkl, 11 sacks, 4 FF, and 3 PD.
My question I guess is.. Without touching the big three.. How would you feel if Dallas could trade Chaz Green or La'el Collins in order to shore up our DL with a Premier Pass rusher? I know we would take a hit with either of them off the team, But we have a mobile Qb and 3/5 of our line is All-Pro's..

Imagine our starting DL looking like this:
Lawrence-Collins-Irving-*Jones/etc

rotating in:
Tapper-Crawford-Paea-Taco/Mayowa

OK, let me have it:/
Considering Smith has had back issues, we may need Green for a game or two. I would just keep what we have and see if J. Smith can provide some pass rush in certain situations ala Clay Matthews from GB.

Yes, you can overpay. The Vikings did that to get Herschel Walker. If we trade away essential players and draft picks that hurt you in other areas too much, you've overpayed. We definitely overpayed for Joey Galloway. He actually was a talented receiver, but wasn't worth what we gave up for him. If we gave up a first, plus quality players like Collins, and the DE we got was anything less than a holy terror to quarterbacks, it would not be worth it. You do have a point, however. It would be worth it if the upgrade on D got us a Super Bowl. That's a huge "if", however.

Who said anything about giving up essential players, if you read my first response I was completely against doing that. Picks and expiring contract that are unlikely to be re-signed are NOT essential players.

Galloway and Roy Williams were stupid trades because Jerry was trying to correct and justify his horrendous mistake of bypassing Randy Moss.

You asked if it's possible to overpay, and the answer to that is yes. Look, we're on the same page. We both would be for a smart trade and not one of these idiotic trades Jerry has done in the past.

All I know for sure is that this next upcoming draft better be nothing but DTs and DEs...

In the last few hours, the Bills have traded Sammy Watkins to the Rams and Ronald Darby to the Eagles. They are clearly rebuilding and hoping to get one of the 2018 QBs (Darnold, Rosen, Allen).

Wonder what they would want for Jerry Hughes or Lorenzo Alexander.

Hughes is 28 and would come with a $5.4M cap hit.

Alexander is 34, has a $2M cap hit, and is coming off a career year where he had 12.5 sacks.

Get to work McClay (Jerry).
