I'm brazilian, I am a soccer fan. I joined the board in feb '12, follow the Cowboys since '07. I don't post here so often, but I'm always reading the comments.

It's heartbreaking. The club has reached the final exactly 1 week ago in a spectatular save by the goalkeeper, on the final play of the game. 1st international final, it was supposed to be the greatest match of Chape's history.

The whole soccer community is in grief. I can't even imagine the pain of 71 the victims' families that are suffering right now.

Just heard that it ran out of fuel. Don't quote me on that though.

The team did not want to book a commercial flight from Sao Paulo (Brazil's largest city and national hub) to Bogota (Colombia's capital), and from Bogota to Medellin, the city that would host the 1st final leg. The reason for that is not clear. Instead, they chose a bolivian charter company recommended by Conmebol, the South American Soccer Confederation. That company flew with Argentina national soccer team, Atletico Nacional (the Chape's opponent in the finals) and others SA soccer clubs recently. The charter company past is sketchy, at best. Of the three planes that the company owns, it was the only one operating as the other two were being repaired. The pilot was one of the charter's co-owner.

It is not official. But yes, like Dexter correctly answered, the early investigation and leaked audio of the pilot and the air traffic control points that the plane ran out of fuel. There was originally a fuel stop scheduled during the last leg of the flight, but the pilot had calculated that he could make without it. Unfortunately, that was his fatal mistake.
