Trey Lance: Bad trades for SF and Dallas?

The 49ers traded three 1st round picks (2021, 2022, 2023) so they could draft Trey Lance. Lucky for them, they would find Brock Purdy. The 49ers SB window has probably closed. Those three draft picks sure could have helped the 49ers replace players that are now over 30 years old.

Fast forward to the 49ers realizing that Trey Lance is not a starter in the NFL. They cut bait by finding a trade partner that would take a flier on a player that, in fact, is basically the definition of mediocre. So instead of keeping our 4th round pick to shore up a badly needed position on the team, we traded for a player that has done little more that keep the bottom of the bench warm during games. Did JJ stop and think why SF was letting go a player they invested so much draft capital into?

JJ swung and missed. Time to cut bait and get what we can for Trey Lance (if anything)?

I don't blame Jerry for taking a risk on a not so long ago top 5 pick, but its without question been a waste of a trade unless something crazy happens to end this season. At this point the Cowboys have no way of getting anything for Lance. He is the backup to end the season and he will most likely explore FA options at seasons end. I would think the odds of him sticking around in Dallas as a backup are extremely thin as he really needs a read option/RPO heavy offense and that is way too different from what the Cowboys will be running with Dak.

He’s still better than Cooper Rush. If he had a shot.

The problem wasn't so much the fourth round pick Dallas gave up, it was the fact that Lance was going to soon be a free agent. Pretty dumb to bring in a developmental guy, but not have time to develop him!
Right, and his free agency was perfectly in line with that of Prescott. How could it have ever worked out? What scenario?

Not to mention, and the bust taken one pick ahead of Lance was dealt for a swap of 6th and 7ths.

Jerry gave a straight 4th. Was played badly.

The only scenario I can reach for under which this may have sort of worked was if Prescott was hurt LAST year and Lance stepped in and played very well.

But they would have needed to eventually pay HIM big dollars as well…maybe not quite as much as Prescott but exactly how much less in that case?

He was also obviously someone that needed reps and to be on a rebuilding team and Dallas wasn’t the place to get that shot.

It wasn’t anything more than Jerry playing with his toy. Considering he went on the tv asap and said he did it all by himself, I’d guess there was some sort of internal strife and he wanted to show everyone that he is still the boss.

Losing these draft picks wouldn’t matter much if they didn’t rely on ONLY that to get better.

Doesn’t go much further than they aren’t any good at this. Not at all.

Obviously they got a first round pick in the deal, the one they used on Lance. They gave up two 1st rounders to get in position to take him. The net was two firsts, not three. It was nonetheless a huge mistake and may well have cost them a Super Bowl. We’ll never know. Now they’re a five win team, too. I live in northern California. I can say 49ers fans regret the deal their favorite team made to get Lance more than Cowboys fans regret the deal their team made to get him. Trance is an unusual story. It will be interesting to see if any team is interested in signing him. He’s a free agent in 15 weeks.

SF trading three first round picks for Lance and having to move on after only a couple of seasons could be one reason the window has slammed shut on them. Not having those first round picks has come back to bite them. They could have built a much stronger team with those picks.

They cut bait because of Brock Purdy and didn’t want a Qb controversy / media battle. Lance would still be on there team now if Brock wasn’t there. Jerry gambled and lost
The 9ers saw a bust and parted ways. Jerry learned nothing from it and gave up a 4th. 6th or 7th ok but the inmates are running the asylum.

All speculation at this point but I do actually think that based on the timing of the Dak contract that had Lance not been a train wreck most of the preseason Jerry would have thrown him $20-30M per year to be a starter in 2025 instead of giving Dak $60. Who knows if there is any truth to that or not, and honestly at this point it really doesnt matter. In the end it ended up being a complete waste of a 4th round pick whether we want to give jerry benefit of the doubt or not.

Paying Dak 60 per doesn’t look great, but paying Lance 30 off of preseason results would have been worse. Either way he overpaid to SF beyond any debate.

The Mingo deal was ridiculous as well considering the QB was lost for this season days before, but you can at least make sort of a case….at least they have him for two more years.

I don’t think they understand the concept of draft picks not living up to their billing. It happens routinely to every team and they don’t seem to get it.

Their philosophies are deeply flawed and I doubt anyone who they employ would dare point that out…if they are capable of recognizing it in the first place.

Shananan would have stuck with him for his full
Rookie contract but Brock Purdy changed everything.

bad for both....SF minimally (literally) recovered just a bit.....otherwise he would have been let go.

we totally lost on this trade. got literally nothing out of it.

And what source do you base that info on? If it came from the 9ers organization, it was lip service to find a Jerry for a higher pick.
