Mingo is not that good if he can't contribute anything on the Panthers. We could sure use that 4th rounder in April. We need all the picks we can get.
In 2023 Mingo was 2nd on the team in receptions and receiving yards.

The Cowboys have 8 picks in 7 rounds next April as of today. Hopefully they trade down (Parsons, Guyton) and pick up another one.

The 49ers traded three 1st round picks (2021, 2022, 2023) so they could draft Trey Lance. Lucky for them, they would find Brock Purdy. The 49ers SB window has probably closed. Those three draft picks sure could have helped the 49ers replace players that are now over 30 years old.

Fast forward to the 49ers realizing that Trey Lance is not a starter in the NFL. They cut bait by finding a trade partner that would take a flier on a player that, in fact, is basically the definition of mediocre. So instead of keeping our 4th round pick to shore up a badly needed position on the team, we traded for a player that has done little more that keep the bottom of the bench warm during games. Did JJ stop and think why SF was letting go a player they invested so much draft capital into?

JJ swung and missed. Time to cut bait and get what we can for Trey Lance (if anything)?
You mean Phenom Trance was a mistake?

How do you cur bait at this point? His contract is guaranteed.

They cut bait because of Brock Purdy and didn’t want a Qb controversy / media battle. Lance would still be on their team now if Brock wasn’t there. Jerry gambled and lost
What battle? The media and fans do not argue over QB2 and QB3.

The problem wasn't so much the fourth round pick Dallas gave up, it was the fact that Lance was going to soon be a free agent. Pretty dumb to bring in a developmental guy, but not have time to develop him!
Well a developmental guy is an understatement.

He barely played in HS(55 completions and only played 1 year in college. Going into year 4 he is still working on his footwork and throwing motion.

You don't give up that many picks and trade up for a developmental guy period, never mind a team that is in a SB window.

Lynch should have been fired.

Worst draft day trade in NFL history. Not an even close.

Obviously they got a first round pick in the deal, the one they used on Lance. They gave up two 1st rounders to get in position to take him. The net was two firsts, not three. It was nonetheless a huge mistake and may well have cost them a Super Bowl. We’ll never know. Now they’re a five win team, too. I live in northern California. I can say 49ers fans regret the deal their favorite team made to get Lance more than Cowboys fans regret the deal their team made to get him. Trance is an unusual story. It will be interesting to see if any team is interested in signing him. He’s a free agent in 15 weeks.
Technically they gave up 3. To move up and get a higher number 1. You can call it a net 2 1st round picks. However, Trance was a complete bust. So they gave up 3 picks and got nothing out of it, accept our 4th 2 years later, which in real time equates to a 6th.

All speculation at this point but I do actually think that based on the timing of the Dak contract that had Lance not been a train wreck most of the preseason Jerry would have thrown him $20-30M per year to be a starter in 2025 instead of giving Dak $60. Who knows if there is any truth to that or not, and honestly at this point it really doesnt matter. In the end it ended up being a complete waste of a 4th round pick whether we want to give jerry benefit of the doubt or not.
And a waste of $5.2M this year.

Shananan would have stuck with him for his full
Rookie contract but Brock Purdy changed everything.
Not even close to being true. Why did they sign Sam Darnold and give him big money? They new even before pre-season that Trance was going to be QB3.

The chance of fourth rounder being a starter is around 20%. So in the grand scheme of things, taking a fourth round flyer on an overpaid-for first rounder, actually graded high second rounder, is low risk, high reward.
You must like Jerry math.

If he had actually evaluated the player, after the draft or asked his scouts, he'd his trade never would have happened. At least not for a 4th. Maybe a 6th at best.

Lance and Mingo. Both examples of Cowboys not understanding the market and what the true price is to acquire these players. Both were about to be cut.
Cowboys not understanding or GM Jethro not knowing what the hell he is doing?

But the problem here is that 4th rounders start in other positions, some that we need badly. Was Lance ever really going to play here over the $60 million man?
Or at least rotate on the field. I am sure Trance might be able to play on the kickoff team.

Both had 2nd round grades. Cowboys got them for a 4th. On paper seems like a good deal.

I wish the Cowboys had more time with Lance. Mingo should be in a much better position to contribute next year.
Jerry can make plenty of more time. Go ahead Jerry give Trance a 4 year extension.

The real travesty here is I have yet to hear a reporter challenge Jerry on wasting a 4th round pick on a guy that you have no intention of using. In a lost season (sorry sports fans, it's over) they're not even sticking him out there. It was mind numbingly stupid
If that does not scream Trance is a bust, I don't know what will.

We’ll agree to disagree. Both will be out of the league in 3 years. Their draft grades and where they were drafted is irrelevant. How many players with 2nd round grades have been bust. Too many to count!
3 years might be generous.
