Trey Lance, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix, Bo Nix

I’ve never heard of a professional athlete willingly taking a pay cut to go to the minors .

I’m musing about it. That’s why I mentioned precedence in the OP. Ideally, the Cowboys will lock him up to a 2-3 year contract, and loan him to a UFL team.

I do think playing in the UFL would be the best thing for Lance's career. If I was him, I wouldn't sign with an NFL team. I'd go to the UFL for playing time and bet on myself.
Trey Lance is faster and stronger than Prescott ever was and he's 24, he needs more time, has major upside. SF tried to be cute with Lance and Darnold, they were wrong, they wanted to be geniuses with their 6th rd pick

He needs to play. The more he doesn't play, the more he doesn't develop. Darnold took years, of playing, to get it figured out. Of course, it helps that he's on a team with two top receivers, a top tight end and a free agent RB who can play.

Lance has still taken a very low amount of snaps in games. Bumps should be expected, and the best way to learn from those is to actually experience them.

Can they do that? I'm not aware of NFL teams being able to use the UFL as a minor league. It would be nice, though.

That kind of thing may be able to happen in the future, but not without the expressed consent of the NFLPA.

After what I saw week 18 I have hope in him
If any person with any NFL team who can actually ascertain a players potential agrees with your assessment there will be some demand for Trances services. My guess is the best he can hope for is being invited to Cowboys camp and will be signed if he makes the team.

I kind of hope he comes back as Dak's backup. He definitely needs work, but looked better last week.

As others have already mentioned, they should have just played him this season. We were never winning anything with Cooper Rush. We already know what Rush is.

I just read this tidbit in this article.

“ Lance is only about seven months older than Washington rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. He's a day younger than Atlanta's Michael Penix and two months or so younger than Bo Nix in Denver.”

I’ve been on the fence about writing him off but this certainly puts things in perspective. Add this to the Darnold resurrection and we sometimes can be too quick to sunset these guys.

He needs a lot of game time experience to really know what he is. I wish there was a G league equivalent for the NFL. Just musing, but I wonder what the precedence is of a team loaning a player to the UFL during the summer.

Lance will NEVER be a starting NFL franchise QB.
I don't think he is a qualified backup at this point.
QB either has it (as Bo, Jayden, and Penix are showing) or they don't.
None of our QBs can carry the load of a franchise QB no matter how much talent you surround them with.

The theory I've been thinking about:

The conventional wisdom is that first round picks need to be instant starters while mid and later round picks carry clipboard and learn. But I wonder if we have that backwards.

Most of the best mid to late rounders (Brady, Montana, Unitas, Starr, Anderson,Tarkenton, etc.) were at least fighting for starting jobs from the beginning. And most of the qbs who bounce around and take time to develop (the Plunkett Model) were first round picks.

Mayfield, Darnold, Goff, Geno Smith in recent years, are good examples.

I don’t think Jerruh will let him walk. That would make him look stupid (if you didn’t think he could look any more dumb). They resign him and let Rush go.

Now go back and compare their body of work, from HS and College.

Can I get the lotto numbers please?

Jay Daniels played 53 games at Cajon and set CIF-SS records with 210 touchdowns and over 17,600 total yards.

Bo Nix career stats in high school were staggering.10,393 passing yards, 127 passing touchdowns, 34 rushing touchdowns.
12,505 total yards of offense.

Penix Jr. finished his career 342-of-576 (59.4 percent) with 29 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and five 300-yard games. He rushed for 165 yards on 64 attempts with six scores. Penix shares fifth in 300-yard games, and ranks sixth in completion percentage and 10th in passing TDs on Indiana’s career lists.

Trey Lance 893 yards passing, 8 TD passes, 46 completions, 88 attempts.

I have no idea how Trance can catch up in playing experience. He also has significantly less playing experience than all 3 in college. The kid needs a Time Machine.

At this point his best bet would be to find a great financial advisor.
