Dak has had a bit of the injury bug 2 out of the last 3 years. This move was for 2 things - improvement on Rush, if Dak were to be out long term like 2020 - Rush isn't likely going to have the same short term results/success as he did last season, for an extended period of time. Now I'm not saying Lance would either - but there is atleast legit physical talent difference in Rush and Lance.

The other thing would be to possible flip him for a higher draft pick if he does produce some.

Dak's contract and Lance's contract do not really match up if you are looking for leverage on Dak. Something has to give next season with Dak and an extension....if Lance's deal was 3 years with the option, then you might be able to use some leverage there.

All I want is the best man under center, don't really care who it is. Whomever gives the Cowboys the best chance to win, today or tomorrow. The guy today may not be the guy tomorrow . No agenda other than the Cowboys being successful. Whatever it takes, whomever it takes.

Go Cowboys!
Cooper will never be given the chance.

It’s as obvious as can be. This was a message to the unknowing Dak. There is no comfort for you anymore. We wouldn’t resign your BFF and now this. It’s put up or shut season.

The writing is on the wall and it couldn’t be anymore clear.
This is a wake up call to Dak. That’s why he was blindsided by it. He thought he was safe. He thought he was untouchable. He become comfortable in the mediocrity.
It's hard to watch someone so invested in his twisted rage-driven world view that he so completely loses touch with objective reality. Get help.

Jerry has never had the foresight to trade for a guy just to flip him later for something better.

Jerry is 80 years old. He’s not changing his ways.

This is an out of character move from Jerry. He does not trade draft picks for guys he has no interest in playing. It’s just not the way Jerry has ever done business.

It won’t happen fast and maybe not this year at all, but the purpose of this trade is to put pressure on Dak.

Daks contract is coming up and Jerry trades for a young, raw, 1st rounder QB and that’s supposed to be a coincidence and depth move?

Jerry could’ve signed a veteran like Wentz, Flacco, or waited until cuts, or kept Grier if he was looking for a depth move.

He didn’t even give a heads up to Dak that he was doing this knowing a splash like this will make big news and allowed Dak to be blindsided instead.

The writing is on the wall and it couldn’t be anymore clear.
SMH. Still clueless.

Jerry made this move without even notifying or getting input from Mike McCarthy because Big Mike would likely not have approved of the player. Heck, when a 2 year veteran 3rd overall pick can't even beat out a clearly obvious overrated and also another overvalued 3rd overall pick now veteran journeyman on his 3rd team for the backup QB job on a team who has a QB pass happy proven head coach, it means you suck and likely are irreparable.

The main reason Jerry made the trade without consulting his head coach was to use as leverage against Dak and his super greedy agent next year in case Dak refuses to give the team a discount during his 2nd contract extension negotiations. As a late 4th round draft pick, Dak was force thrown into the fire as a starter and has never looked back, breaking Cowboys franchise and NFL records ever since. Trey Lance can't even touch Dak's ankles, but Jerry certainly brought Lance in as leverage to try to get Dak to accept a lower priced contract extension if Dak truly wants to stay in Dallas.

Careful what you wish for. The grass is not greener on the other side of the road.

Jerry don’t trade draft picks for back up QBs.

He could’ve signed a proven vet to do that or keep Grier.

This is a wake up call to Dak. That’s why he was blindsided by it. He thought he was safe. He thought he was untouchable. He become comfortable in the mediocrity.
Are you ok? He traded a 4 for a unique situation. That’s it. May work out. May not. The upside outweighs the downside here. It is rare that a 23 year old on a rookie deal, 1st rounder, hits the market. It’s also debatable as to the Niners culpability here. Regardless Lance is a good kid, physically impressive, and a noted hard worker. Why not?

Jerry hopes he blossoms no doubt but to say he was brought in to take Dak’s job is just stupid. Lance will take at least a year to figure out if he can play at all. If he shows BIG improvement and Dak flounders then maybe it could happen. Too many variables there to work out now.

Your bias against Dak is just weird man. Get a new line. You are smarter than this.

Do you really believe mm wouldn’t have approved of the lance trade? Give me a break. Lance is a night and day difference then Grier. Teams have to carry 3 qbs on the roster anyways. This was a no brainer. The only way I could see mike not approving is if we gave up more than a 4th.

I don't know how you see it that way with this contract. They have to restructure him. There is no way around it and he holds all the cards!

I think the truth is in the numbers. There is no way that Dallas is going to know before next preseason if there's any real hope for Lance. By then, Dallas will have had to have made a decision about Dak because it is not going to pay him $59.5 million next year. His extension will likely come before March because Dallas will want to clear up cap dollars. The only way the Cowboys don't extend him is if they do wait until after this season and he has a poor season. Based on his history, that isn't likely to happen. He will more likely be a top 10 QB again.

I know you want this to be some message to Dak or to say something about his future, but timingwise it doesn't really work. We would have needed to have acquired Lance before this preseason and given him every opportunity to prove himself. Now, he's going to get limited snaps as the scout-team QB and no opportunity to prove himself before next preseason. The Cowboys can't wait on Dak's contract until then. In fact, the team probably will have it done before the fifth league day of next year because he gets a $5 million roster bonus at that time.

I consider Lance more of an insurance policy. You never know what's going to happen during a season. If he develops and something happens to Dak, maybe he gets a shot to step in. If he steps in and plays like a first-round pick, maybe he gets a shot to keep the role (like Dak did when he stepped in for Romo). We know what Rush is, a QB who can win if the defense plays outstanding. We have no idea what Lance will become.

As far as not telling Dak, it could be just that they didn't see the need. They acquired a castoff, a project to try to develop, not a challenger to his job. Lance is a reclamation project.

Its to the point where he's the only one who hasn't given up on the whole "Hate Dak" brigade. I mean there's guys who don't like him and arent' fans of him but this approach is just lonely and sad.

Didn't read the OP but just wanted to say. This girl or guy averages 30 posts a day about how much she hates the Cowboys every day since February of 2021.
(23,000 posts 2.5 years) Please...can't we get some of these people out of here so that 30 threads every day don't get sabotaged. Let's make this place about the Cowboys for once.
