QB (3) - I think we go with three here. I think the Cowboys are a lot higher on Weeden and his growth potential in this offense than people are giving him credit for. He struggled, but he also showed growth from Cleveland. Being in a better offense probably didn't hurt. He is capable of becoming Romo's career backup/insurance plan. I also think this buys a lot of time to develop Vaughan. There is absolute no pressure for him to have to start.
HB (3) - I don't know if we can go with 3 here. There are too many unanswered questions at running back. Can McFadden and Williams even stay healthy? I think if you cut it down to three here, someone gets hurt, and now you're scrambling to get another running back who might be a major downgrade. I think four secures you from injury concerns, and also allows you to keep Dunbar who might be the most dynamic option we have on 3rd downs, topping even Cole Beasley.
FB (1) - I think only one fullback makes this team.
WR (5)- Wideout is another tough position. Normally we would go with 5, and I think we all believe the top 4 are pretty locked up. I think the wideouts at the bottom of the depth chart are going to have to make a case for 6. There is a lot of potential here, but I think there is a lot of potential at a lot of position groups.
TE - (3) I think Swaim was brought in to keep the running game going. I think they've drafted tight ends who can catch, and tried to turn them into blockers, and now they're trying the other way around. I think Swaim has some athletic ability and could be a well rounded weapon on offense with time. I think Hanna is gone either this year in a trade or in free agency next year. I think Swaim then becomes your 3rd tight end. So I'd say we probably go 4 here, unless Hanna is traded. They've always coveted a blocking tight end, but have kind of missed opportunities to get one in here.
OL - (8) Offensive line is going to be interesting. Jerry has already said that no one is being traded here, but time will tell. You have a ridiculous amount of depth. As it stands right now you have Collins, Bernadeau and Green as backups.... That's pretty ridiculous. I think that depth results in taking less offensive linemen to the 53. We had 9 last year, and I could see us going as low as 8 this year.
DE - (6) With Hardy likely facing at least a 2 game suspension, I'd say that we can take 7 defensive linemen this year, with Hardy not counting against the 53 until he is back from his suspension.
1. Hardy
2. Lawrence
3. Mincey
4. Gregory
5. Gardner
6. Russell
7. J. Crawford
DT - (4) We had 5 defensive tackles last year, but T. Crawford ended up moving inside. I would say that we do the same. Defensive Tackle is diminished with a defensive end moving inside in the nickel. You have Crawford, Hayden, T. McClain, and two out of Whaley, Bishop, and Coleman. I still think Hayden may be a surprise cut.
LB - (6) I think you've noticed me going long at basically every position so far except going shorter at offensive line.... that just doesn't work. I want to say we go 7 deep at linebacker, but we only went 6 deep last year. Nzeocha is probably going to slate to the PS at this point. You'll have Lee, R. McClain, Hitchens, Brinkley, Wilson, Gachkar.
CB - (4) This was another position where we went short, where position flex probably plays a huge key. Corey White and Byron Jones allow you to have position flex between corner and safety and maybe allows you to still go short here between the safeties. So you kind of want to look at both positions here. Injuries are also a concern.
S (5) - I think Heath gets cut here.
This would probably be the best case scenario
CB - Scandrick, Carr, Claiborne, Patmon
FS - Jones, White
SS - Church, Wilcox, McCray
K/P/LS (3) all speak for themselves
I think Patmon and Claiborne are going to determine how this plays out a lot. Is Claiborne healthym does he start the season on PUP? Does Patmon reach another level this year? If both those things happen, does Carr become expendable if he refuses to take a pay cut?
I think you might see us go as low as 4 defensive tackles on the roster. And you might not see us keep that last defensive end. I think that depends a lot on how long Hardy ultimate is suspended for. I think with the depth you have on the team you really want to look at moving Hanna as soon as possible. He should be featured in the preseason. I think at least one of these running backs gets injured by the end of pre-season, making the decision easier for the front office. I'm thinking Ryan Williams.
I posted conservative numbers at every position group, and I came up with 51, meaning there are 2 spots for players who make a case for themselves. (this assumes that we keep 3 tight ends and Hanna is traded, and that we got really short at OL).
It's getting harder and harder to make a 53 every year. That's a good problem to have though.
