QB (3) - I think we go with three here. I think the Cowboys are a lot higher on Weeden and his growth potential in this offense than people are giving him credit for. He struggled, but he also showed growth from Cleveland. Being in a better offense probably didn't hurt. He is capable of becoming Romo's career backup/insurance plan. I also think this buys a lot of time to develop Vaughan. There is absolute no pressure for him to have to start.

HB (3) - I don't know if we can go with 3 here. There are too many unanswered questions at running back. Can McFadden and Williams even stay healthy? I think if you cut it down to three here, someone gets hurt, and now you're scrambling to get another running back who might be a major downgrade. I think four secures you from injury concerns, and also allows you to keep Dunbar who might be the most dynamic option we have on 3rd downs, topping even Cole Beasley.

FB (1) - I think only one fullback makes this team.

WR (5)- Wideout is another tough position. Normally we would go with 5, and I think we all believe the top 4 are pretty locked up. I think the wideouts at the bottom of the depth chart are going to have to make a case for 6. There is a lot of potential here, but I think there is a lot of potential at a lot of position groups.

TE - (3) I think Swaim was brought in to keep the running game going. I think they've drafted tight ends who can catch, and tried to turn them into blockers, and now they're trying the other way around. I think Swaim has some athletic ability and could be a well rounded weapon on offense with time. I think Hanna is gone either this year in a trade or in free agency next year. I think Swaim then becomes your 3rd tight end. So I'd say we probably go 4 here, unless Hanna is traded. They've always coveted a blocking tight end, but have kind of missed opportunities to get one in here.

OL - (8) Offensive line is going to be interesting. Jerry has already said that no one is being traded here, but time will tell. You have a ridiculous amount of depth. As it stands right now you have Collins, Bernadeau and Green as backups.... That's pretty ridiculous. I think that depth results in taking less offensive linemen to the 53. We had 9 last year, and I could see us going as low as 8 this year.

DE - (6) With Hardy likely facing at least a 2 game suspension, I'd say that we can take 7 defensive linemen this year, with Hardy not counting against the 53 until he is back from his suspension.

1. Hardy
2. Lawrence
3. Mincey
4. Gregory
5. Gardner
6. Russell
7. J. Crawford

DT - (4) We had 5 defensive tackles last year, but T. Crawford ended up moving inside. I would say that we do the same. Defensive Tackle is diminished with a defensive end moving inside in the nickel. You have Crawford, Hayden, T. McClain, and two out of Whaley, Bishop, and Coleman. I still think Hayden may be a surprise cut.

LB - (6) I think you've noticed me going long at basically every position so far except going shorter at offensive line.... that just doesn't work. I want to say we go 7 deep at linebacker, but we only went 6 deep last year. Nzeocha is probably going to slate to the PS at this point. You'll have Lee, R. McClain, Hitchens, Brinkley, Wilson, Gachkar.

CB - (4) This was another position where we went short, where position flex probably plays a huge key. Corey White and Byron Jones allow you to have position flex between corner and safety and maybe allows you to still go short here between the safeties. So you kind of want to look at both positions here. Injuries are also a concern.

S (5) - I think Heath gets cut here.

This would probably be the best case scenario

CB - Scandrick, Carr, Claiborne, Patmon
FS - Jones, White
SS - Church, Wilcox, McCray

K/P/LS (3) all speak for themselves

I think Patmon and Claiborne are going to determine how this plays out a lot. Is Claiborne healthym does he start the season on PUP? Does Patmon reach another level this year? If both those things happen, does Carr become expendable if he refuses to take a pay cut?

I think you might see us go as low as 4 defensive tackles on the roster. And you might not see us keep that last defensive end. I think that depends a lot on how long Hardy ultimate is suspended for. I think with the depth you have on the team you really want to look at moving Hanna as soon as possible. He should be featured in the preseason. I think at least one of these running backs gets injured by the end of pre-season, making the decision easier for the front office. I'm thinking Ryan Williams.

I posted conservative numbers at every position group, and I came up with 51, meaning there are 2 spots for players who make a case for themselves. (this assumes that we keep 3 tight ends and Hanna is traded, and that we got really short at OL).

It's getting harder and harder to make a 53 every year. That's a good problem to have though.

It should be noted that we went 4 deep at corner because scandrick was suspended, but we remained 4 deep after Claiborne was injured. I think our defense has a lot more flexibility now with White and Jones though. Whatever happens we should be able to absorb it.

Last Season:

Week1
QB 3
RB 3
FB 1
WR 5
TE 3
OL 9
DL 11
LB 7
DB 8
ST 3

Final Week
QB 3
RB 3
FB 1
WR 5
TE 3
OL 9
DL 10
LB 8
DB 8
ST 3

Keeping only 8 on OL seem the most unlikely. The have had at least 9 and sometimes 10 OL in week 1 for the past 5 years. They got down to 8 a couple of times during the season but when including OL on IR the count was always a minimum of 10.

OL week 1:

2014 9

2013 10

2012 9

2011 9

2010 10

OL final week:

2014 9 (1 on IR)

2013 8 (2 on IR)

2012 11 (1 on IR)

2011 8 (2 on IR)

2010 10

Like your post. With exception of QB, I would have cut Weeden yesterday:D I like the depth but wouldn't mind if we could fetch a mid pick for Berd somehow (not happening, and 6-7th picks are generally useless with this team with Crayton and Rat as only recent exceptions).

IMO, if Vaughan is not ready to be the #2 this season, then it seems unlikely that he will ever develop into a starter.

Agree, and surprised we didn't snatch one late (UDFA) to give him a little comp. tbh.

I doubt Jones and White are moved to safety. Ideally either can fill in at CB or safety in a pinch, but as far as learning and primarily lining up at one spot, I doubt they move both. And while I agree that if Jones is moved, it likely means Heath is gone, it seems Jones has been playing mainly CB at mini camp and OTAs

Keeping 8 OL seems unlikely, but when's the last time the team's had this much versatility?

Bernadeau can play any of the three interior spots. Collins can play 4 positions. Green can play either tackle spot (and likely kick inside to guard).

I think they end up going 9, but if they wanted to go 8 to keep a specialty player (Whitehead for special teams? Dunbar?), this is the year to do it.

I'm slightly disappointed about Jones being a CB bc I thought the team was being proactive regarding the problems seen at the S position over the last decade or so. I understand that a top CB takes precedent over a top S, but an average CB compared to a great S seems more appropriate when gauging Jones considering his rawness (didn't know that was a word until spell check didn't correct me:D), etc.

Yes, of all scenarios, it seems the least likely that both Jones and White would be moved to Safety.

I don't see why they would keep McCray and cut Heath. Heath is a to ST player, is younger and is more of an option to actually play Safety than McCray. McCray and Heath were both on the 2013 roster and Heath started 9 games while McCray started Zero games.

Bernadeau is in the final year of his contract.

Leary will be RFA next season and a FA in 2017.

Free is 31 and had foot/ankle surgeries in both Jan 2014 and Jan 2015.

The 9th and 10th players would be Weems and Gibson.

They've invested over 2 seasons in Weems. He was on the 53 for some game at the end of 2012 and then all of 2013. He was on IR for 2014.

The OL coach and Columbo really like Gibson according to some reports.

Can't keep 7 combined QB and RB. If a back gets hurt you sign one off the street and they will be effective behind this line. They just have to be good enough to get what's blocked.

Swaim isn't even a great blocker. Hanna is the favorite in that battle. Bet were gonna go long on LBers. Heath has a role on this team. Better coverage safety than church and a core special teamer.

There were some snaps last season when Church was off the field and replaced by Heath. It was in obvious passing situations.

I doubt it. Jerry said that they needed to get better at the position this off season. The fact that they did not address the position means to me that either they like Vaughn a lot (a big maybe) or they are waiting for other teams cuts to see who is available (also a big maybe). I still think there are two or three guys not on the roster yet who make the 53.
