Did you actually read the whole thing? What is she supposed to do, send him into foster care? I'd do the same damn thing.

Obviously he didn't.

I think she and her mother could've handled things better, though.

If her mother has all those obligations, she should've never been under consideration to take care of her son.

And the mother shouldn't have waited so late to tell her she couldn't have handled it.

Agreed. I doubt the mom exhausted all of her options, but I'm sure the military will find out and act accordingly.

I can't say I would have put my child in foster care either.

I have no opinion on the specific matter (whether she should be shipped off or not) without further information.

That said, why the hell would you have a kid as a single parent if you have military obligations? There's a certain element of personal responibility there.

Sorry sister? WTH is wrong with you? Mom's should not be forced to go to war and besides, this isn't WWIII. She won't be missed...

from the article said:
Hutchinson, who's assigned to the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, joined the Army in 2007 and had no previous deployments, Sussman said. She said Hutchinson is no longer in a relationship with the father.

She wasn't single when she had the baby. Even if she was, not every pregnancy is planned.

True then again why join the military? If she can't take on the obligations to the military then she should be granted a discharge from the military.

She could have already been in the military when she had the baby and she doesn't want a discharge.

Yes, I got that. Again, this isn't to say that she should be forced to go. But it's still a mistake to get pregnant without a stable way to take care of her baby. That would happen if she was working in the private sector too, it's just that being in the military makes it way worse.

What kind of message does it send when people sign up for the army and then get pregnant 2 years into it without ever deploying? What exactly is earning you the paycheck then?

She was under the impression that her mother was going to watch the baby until the mom backed out at the last minute. That's about as stable as it gets, expecting your mom to help with the grandchild.

She joined in 2007, so she definitely was in the military first. Why would she want a discharge anyway? She probably chose the military because it was her best option.

Having a child while in the military should be outlawed?

Her mother's life doesn't exactly sound very stable. I'm also wondering where the father is in all this. I think it just goes back to "stop having kids out of wedlock", as old-fashioned as that sounds.

Birth control is pretty easy to use nowadays.

Again, no. I'm making moral judgment here. Which, I presume, is still allowed. Not everything has to be a letter-of-the-law thing.

I just think she made an bad life decision. Still think the army screwed up in detaining her like that.

Military is not a democracy. Women wanted in the military and fought to get this right and deservedly so but it is the military not some normal 8 to 5 job you have certain obligations as a member of the armed service and many people are put out when they are called to go overseas it sucks but it is also a volunteer military no one forced anyone to join if you’re not willing to live up to your obligations then you have no business being in the US Military.

I have no problem with that and I'm sure the military has a program to help her.

Not at all but when you are called up to do your duty then you do it. I'm sure many men and women could come up with reason why they should not have to go but the military does not work that way. If you can't meet your obligation to the service then you need to be discharged from the service.

I believe it's still allowed, you just sound a bit self-righteous but it's no skin off my back.

I'd never say having a child is a bad life decision, especially since it seemed she was primed to go until her mom returned the kid.
