True or False on this statement........

I used to think some used it for the pain, and maybe some still do but that excuse is not a valid excuse to use really because the NFL teams will give the players all the pain pills they can take to keep them on the field and do it without worrying about failed drug tests...so that excuse should no longer be valid.

As far as the percentage...Probably a little high but I bet it is not too far off.

The hardest part to understand is how on earth that many of them avoid testing positive.

I suppose it is easier than I think considering they know almost a year out to the day when they will need to submit a clean sample and only the dumb ones lose track of time.

The larger ones have to worry more. But the guys with hardly no body fat, that work out regularly, would be fine as long as they dont smoke every day. It actually gets out of your system pretty fast if you arent smoking multiple times a day every day.

And 99% of those pot smokers are smart enough to stay away from their stash leading up to the biggest day of their life (draft).

GM to me: "My estimate is 30 to 40 percent of players in this draft class use marijuana regularly. That's right in line with our league."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find that hard to believeo_O

If they use it regularly, there would be a higher rate of failed tests.

The amount that do it within the context of working around the testing times is a different story. That's probably a high number.

Stupid law, stupid rule, but it is still the rule and a testament to how stupid a player could be to get caught knowing full when when they are going to test them each year.

My guess is that more than we would think test positive at least once but never again. And then there are probably a lot of casual smokers.

In for someone to count the number of times "high' has been used in this thread (high number, that number seems high, etc.).

For science.

I bet there will be a day soon when a player takes either the school or the nfl to court stating that the ban of marijuana use is contributing to long term head trauma brought on by multiple concussions. The player will most definitely lose, but if given enough media coverage, it may put the schools or the nfl in a difficult situation where they may adopt a more relaxed stance for PR purposes.

Question I have is......If that percentage is true....then why aren't more players being suspended? or caught?

Because they only test once per year if you aren't already in the system. The test is the same time, every year. You literally have to be an idiot or an addict to get caught.

I can believe it.

What I can't believe is that somehow in this one country it can be legal in one part of it and illegal somewhere else.

That, to me, is a bigger concern.

States rights. I have no issue with this.

Except a lot of those pain pills come with some scary side affects, addiction just being one.

A difference of opinions then I guess.

I don't think it's good for the country to be so fragmented on such an important issue.

I believe that this should be a decision made on a national, not state level.

The fact is, the country is fragmented on the issue. You can't change that by making it legal or illegal at a federal level. To me that makes it the perfect issue to be defined by the states. I don't like how things are in my state? Easy to leave for another state. I don't like things in my country? Much harder to move to a new country.

In all fairness however, I think most issues should be decided by the states. Too easy to usurp and abuse power when it is all concentrated in one place. One of the main reasons this country was formed was to get away from an abusive Centralized power.

OK, I don't want to get in trouble for getting too 'political' so we'll just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

(and for the record, I'm a huge fan of barbeque!)

Agree on both points! Good day to you sir.

True-ish. I thik it's on the lower end of that percentage (30-35max), but I think it's often more for pain management than just wanting to get high. If players can drink and use tobacco, I have no problem with it if its legal in their state.

If it screws up their playing ability, they wont' be playing, plain and simple.

THC has very little effect as an analgesic or anti-inflammatory.

That conjecture is a Hail-Mary.

I believe it's true. Marijuana doesn't have the stigma that came with it in the 80's or even the 90's. Particularly with the younger generation of people. It's now basically legalized in a couple of states and soon to be in many more states. I think the league should really look into lifting the marijuana ban if it is feasible to do so.

True.

I think that is also true for the large population of Americans so the NFL would just be a micro version for what is true for the entire nation.

The idea that 30-40% of all Americans smoke weed seems impossible to believe and makes me wonder how on Earth it wouldn't be legalized in every state if put to ballot. The smoker is definitely going to show up to vote. The apathetic and I believe that is the greatest number of people won't show up so you would have only the most staunch objectors voting against it.

Narrowing it down to a group such as football players....I would still find it hard to believe the number is that high. We are talking 1 out of 3 or more. I spend a lot of time around my son's high school football team and wrestling team. I would guess closer to 20-25%...still a high number though. I think the other thing is to define what is regularly. I would say that is at least a few times a week. Once or twice a month wouldn't be regular usage in my mind.
