Trysten Hill Came Alive

Nothing personal against Hill but every time I focus on him especially on running plays he has been mauled by an OL. He’s played 77 snaps this year and has 4 total tackles and 2 pressures. And if I recall Fournette ran right at Hill’s hole on that long run in the TB game. I don’t know if he sells out on every play by trying to shoot a gap or if he is doing what the defensive play call requires him to do but I’ve seen him over the years just get thrown around especially against the run.

There are lots of DTs in this league who have more tackles for loss than Hill has combined tackles on similar snap counts so I’m not seeing the good play some of you are talking about.

Who are these amazing DTs you speak of.. Hill has 4 combined tackles on 77 snaps according to you.. Please share which DTs have more than 4 TFLs on 75-80 snaps..

There are 5 DTs currently who do have more than 4 TFLs..

Jonathan Allen with 8 - but he got 5 of them against us.. My guess is he will cool off when he doesn't get to face our weak LG/C combo..
Aaron Donald and Grady Jarrett both have 5.. but I guarantee you those two play three times the snaps Hill does.
Kevin Givens of the 49ers and Justin Jones of the Bears also have 5. I don't know how much they play..

So in your mind 5 is "lots of DTs."

Now when you go to the snap count your statement becomes even more ridiculous.

Allen has played 206 snaps.
Donald has played 233 snaps
Jarrett - 214
Jones - 168
Givens - 102

So I could not find even ONE DT who satisfied your criteria of having more TFLs than Hill has tackles on similar snaps.. Maybe you have better sources.. please share them..

LOL he's done virtually nothing this year per usual.

One of the worst draft picks in team history.
I don’t know how people defend this pick. Hill really hasn’t done anything to justify his draft slot.

He will occasionally make a tackle here or there but so would an udfa.

The stats below are Total / #snaps.
- Smaller numbers are better.
- Example: It required 39 snaps for Hill to achieve 1 QBKD and 206 snaps for Allen to achieve 1 QBKD.
- QBKD = QB Knockdown

    • 39 …......... Trysten Hill
    • N/A …......... Kevin Givens (zero QBKDs in 106 snaps)

I was listening to those sounds from the sidelines clips and Trysten Hill seems to be fitting in well with the team, making some plays, and having fun out there, which can help a player make plays.

With all the negativity towards him before preseason, I'm glad to see him finally coming around as a player.

The NFL isn't easy, and fans are often impatient when it comes to outcomes from a player.

I'm personally loving what the defensive line is bringing lately as a whole, and Hill is part of that.
Was he dead?
:muttley:

Unfortunately fans are prone to seeing what they want to see. And ignore that which they don't. I am not a big PFF grade guy but I am a fan or win rate and I think Hill has the best win rate of all our DTs. People poo pooing his low statistical numbers but then declaring guys who play more snaps but have lower numbers are "better" just amazes me. On a per snap basis Hill is outperforming all of them. That appears to bother some people.. They'll live.

Great post.

Some people output before they have enough input.

I appreciate the fact that you took the time to gather some input before giving us your output.

Wow this illuminates his relatively high production on a per snap basis better than I ever could. It looks like he's playing well.. because he IS playing well. And apparently that has a lot of people's panties in a wad..

Better than Osa.

I actually saw him make a good run stop against Washington. I had not see him do much against the run other than that.

I still would have kept Ridgeway and cut Hill if I was going to release a tackle. I don't think Hill offers much that we're not getting even more from the other DTs, and Ridgeway has some growth potential. Not saying Ridgeway will turn out to be the better player, just that I haven't seen much from Hill to show we needed to keep him, especially since he's in the final year of his contract.

Especially with having to make a decision now on whether to extend Hill. You could have had Ridgeway on a rookie contract for four or five years. i agree.

Yep never understood the negativity towards him.
He was looking improved before the knee injury set him back.
Now healthy,
Now he's a solid rotational player.
The negativity came from his bad attitude and lazy work ethic during his first couple of years.

It wasn't the kid's fault that the Cowboys drafted him when he was not even old enough to drink. He was immature.. Not the first player to come into league at that age still needing to grow up. He was playing better before he got hurt in 2020 and flashed last season in limited duty. And frankly he's been the best DT on this team so far... Quinn actually inserted him into the lineup after Akers had a couple of nice runs.. and the Rams have not had a nice run since.. In fact they have had at least 4 negative runs since that point by my count.

I like Osa. But I expected more from him this year.

I suspect this could be his game right here, against the Rams.

We need sort of an unsung hero for this game.

The rotation & depth is the strength of the DL but they need to start Gallimore & Hill as DT and rotate Osa & Big Bo.

..lets just say that Hill is holding his own right now. He does his job, so others can do thiers.

Guy who shows up to play in a contract year. Haven't we been through this story like a dozen times?
outside 1st round picks most draft picks will show by their contract year. Unless the kid was super sleeper stud and blows up his 1st or 2nd year, player development says players come into their own by year 3 on average so him showing up by year 4 after losing a year to injury is par for the course. This is not the 90s where you could sign picks to 6-7 year deals.

I dont think Osa is playing badly. I think Hill, Gallimore and Osa have been pretty solid. When we are giving up yardage on the ground it is almost always outside the tackles and more often than not to the right side of the defense. Today was much better overall, but the Rams OL is pretty patchwork. Hill is the kind of guy if he keeps playing I would like to see them give a reasonable two year deal to, a lot like they did with Armstrong. We have Armstrong for another year after this on a team friendly deal. Would be nice to get a solid DT on a low end starter deal on his second contract....looking to make noise for a big deal after that.
