Turpin has hurt us more than he's helped us

You're spot on in saying perspective is key here. Between kick returns and punt returns only 9 have been taken back for TDs this year. Kickoffs have become more of a non factor in the NFL due to safety issues. Meanwhile punters in the NFL have only gotten better over the years, and punt teams have gotten more strategic. Unless return teams start to add new wrinkles I just don't see the return game being a major factor in 90% of games anymore.
KR are almost not worth it if taken in the endzone
But 10 yards per punt return is really good
The threat also forces teams to punt shorter and higher for coverage which is a win in itself

He seems to be regressing. Which is true for every player on this team. Which is what happens towards the end of every season.
Agree but easy to forget he is on his second season having played in the other league.

He’s had some good returns negated by our ST committing penalites. Especially Joseph....

Good observation. Getting the ball on the 25 to me means just take it unless the ball is short of the endzone and you see a real crease

Yeah I cringe every time a KR gets taken out of the endzone. Back in the day when you started at the 20 it made sense, the 25 not so much. Plus KRs have such a high probability of holding calls I just don't see the point.

Honestly, I don't know how he made the pro-bowl.

But if I was Fassel I would tell whoever is returning KOs if the ball is in the end zone, don't run it out, ever. Also, fair catch every punt. Why? Because there have been only 6 KO runbacks for a TD all year in the NFL and 2 occurred yesterday. There have been 15 fumbled KO returns. I do not have a number of penalties on KOs but I assume it is way more than 6.

There have been only 3 punts returned for a TD this year. But 84 fumbles have occurred on punts. Again, I am guessing but my guess is there were more penalties by far on punt returns than returns for TDs. Just get whoever is best at catching the football on a punt back to receive punts and tell him just catch it and don't worry about running. Avoid teh fumbles, muffs and penalties.

O course there will be times when we might say, "he should have run that back" but in the long run my guess if the team fair catching every punt will come out ahead by avoiding penalties, which often result in horrendous field position for the receiving team.

I guess what I am say is Turpin is an unnecessary roster spot. Yesterday, Bohanna sat on the bench so Turpin could fumble one punt and have another runback called back because of a penalty.

On the bright side, we may be able to trade him after the season. Wouldn't mind getting a draft pick for him. Especially since we got him from the USFL and he made the Pro Bowl. Maybe we can get a 5th for him?

Lil' boy needs to eat some humble pie.
He's not nearly as great as he thinks he is.

That's what happens to undersized guys. They get small-man complex from being too small and try to overcompensate.

Hope he can turn it around, for the sake of the team.

We would be much better with someone who just catches the damn ball and falls down.

Exactly
Unless it’s a short kick and you have to return it just take a knee
You get a free 25 with little risk

Over confidence is very possible
But it has to be taken into perspective
He’s near the top of the NFL in both punt and kick returns
As you said he brings a threat no one else on this team can
I still like the guy. But what happened to him happens to everyone on occasion. Usually inexperienced WRs. It bounced off his snoot.

The first time I ever played football wearing a helmet, the ball bounced off my facemask on the first deep pass I got. Thankfully it was in practice. You have to account for your facemask. You can't play the same way you do without one. You have to consciously pull it back and out of the way.

It happens but two is not a crazy number
It’s all about concentration
I think sometimes a guy just gets lost mentally thinking about the return or on a fair catch just kind moving on before the catch or letting the ball get on them
I would have him fielding a lot of punts in practice this week to get his attention lol

This is why Jimmy Johnson did not draft dumb players. Turpin doesn't have the mental capacity to decide whether he should kneel down or return it. That's what hurts us the most.

Has anyone else in history made a pro bowl based on preseason performance?

Ryan Switzer still has more return TDs for Dallas than Burpin' Turpin
