Twitter mailbag: Could DeMarcus Ware return to Dallas? - Todd Archer, ESPN

Kevin Wetzel‏@KwopKev Jan 20
@toddarcher With the @Broncos having several free agents is it possible @DeMarcusWare returns on a 2-3 year deal with Dallas? #cowboysmail

11:23 AM - 20 Jan 2016

@toddarcher: I like this question and it's something I wondered about when I wrote about DeMarcus Ware earlier in the week. Let's go with the thought that he won't be back in Denver for the sake of this question. Should the Cowboys consider him? Absolutely. Ware will be able to roll out of bed and get seven sacks. The Cowboys don't really have that kind of guy. The length of the deal doesn't concern me so much. The money involved would. Ware had 7.5 sacks in 11 games in 2015. And I can hear those screaming about Ware not fitting in a 4-3 scheme. Please. Let him rush out of a two-point stance if he wants. It doesn't really matter. He would be signed to be a pass-rush specialist and his snaps would be monitored.

For the right price - I can't imagine a Cowboy fan who wouldn't want Demarcus back until he retires. He would also be coming back to a better situation on the defensive line than when he left and would be an inspiration and mentor to players like Lawrence and Gregory and Irving.

With a reasonable deal - there is no downside in having Demarcus Ware retiring as a Cowboy and I think he would appreciate the opportunity to do so.

I'm not a fan of this idea. I think his injuries and drop in production in the 4-3 are apparent, despite Archer's arrogant claim to the contrary. In fact, Archer's work has been slipping lately. Where he works may be getting to him.

And I think he'd be better off staying in Denver with a payout than coming to Dallas. He'd likely play more, in a better scheme fit, for better money. I mean honestly, how much would anyone be comfortable paying what amounts to a part time specialist?

if the deal is amenable to both sides, bring him back...although, I would think we would see the last of Hardy if they re-signed Ware

Definitely, but I don't think the two bring the same thing to the table at this point. I think Hardy is a full time player while Ware would have to be part time, whether you wanted him to be or not.

This is why I wouldn't make a good gm, I'd like to bring him back so he could retire a cowboy and nostalgia, and he probably won't be worth what you have pay him

DWare was awesome...and totally agree with you...The Cowboys dont need to bring in an Older Often Injured player....thats the reason they let him go in the first place.....Archers articles are a waste of time to read,,,,,he is grasping for stories...throwing anything out their and hoping something sticks......Not worth the time to read anymore......

If Hardy doesn't come back, I could see going with Ware or Mario Williams, who's going to be cut by Buffalo.

Yes. In fact, I'm in favor of going that way. I think Ware and Williams cost less at this point. Although I think both would be role players while Hardy would not come off the field as much.

I think we need a vet DE as we transition to Gregory and Lawrence, though, so I think the lower-priced, part-time options are a good choice.

Of course, I'm nostalgic. I'd also like to see us bring in a low-priced Melton to pair with Crawford and a low-priced Moore as the third corner (if we can't get Claiborne to return on the cheap).

Give me Ware, he'd be perfect he could be a good role model for Gregory..

My thought exactly, until the last paragraph. I think the other Crawford and Irving give us a good pair to back up the 3-tech, I would rather spend the money on improving the 1-tech. On the other hand, I would not be opposed to bringing back Moore. I think it hurt our defense that our two CB's with moxie from 2014 were either injured or playing for TB.

I would probably lean towards Williams just because he has had less injury problems than DWare, but on the other hand I would really like to see DWare and DLaw terrorizing QB's together!

It's true, but I'd love to see him back in a reduced roll where he can thrive and mentor. I don't think you need DeMarcus Ware to be what Archer thinks he can be. I think I would just want his presence.

That said, as feel-good as that would be, I'd rather look at someone like Mario Williams if he becomes available again. Got his cash, maybe team friendly deal now.

So no Sean Lee?

Sacks are sacks. Pressure is pressure.

Who cares if those things are accompanied with slamming clip boards on the sideline and skipping meetings?

Sean Lee definitely doesn't fit the good guy attitude on the field and love his shoulder taps through offensive players on the way back to the huddle as it sets a good tone for the D. But you are totally correct that he is unofficially deemed part time due to his injury history. Ware was helping up QBs after sacking them?

I know Hardy is the the variable topic, but Hardy is much more similar to Lee on the field and believe he will regain to full form after being out of football for over a year (personally think his legs just weren't there due to layoff). If Hardy is resigned, they should definitely implement language regarding his tardiness into being heightened fines when compared to the average player, etc.

He was a real monster for Buffalo until they switched to the 3-4. 10.5 sacks, 13 sacks, and 14.5 sacks.

Depends. Does he still help QB's up after getting a sack? That always grated on me.
